I went to a screening of this at BAMPFA immediately following The Enigma Of Kaspar Ha, both with Werner Herzog in attendance. Herzog introduced the film talking about how the perspective shifts throughout the film, first from Graham Dorrington to Marc Anthony Yhap, and then from Yhap to his rooster for one of the final scenes. He also said that the idea for the film was presented to him by one of his sons, who originally wanted to make the…

I saw this at another BAMPFA screening where Herzog was in attendance, this time as part of a months-long retrospective that they're having of his filmography. He introduced the film talking about Bruno Schleinstein's upbringing in asylums from the age of 3-23, and the depth of his performance.

The Short Films of David Lynch

2002

★★★½ Watched

Having watched all six of the short films compiled here individually as well as the introductions to each one by Lynch himself, I feel confident that I can log this. Some of the shorts are very good (The Grandmother), while some lose their steam quickly (The Cowboy And The Frenchman), but I would say that each one is worth seeing if you're a fan of David Lynch's work.

The Cowboy and the Frenchman

1988

For the first half of this I was preparing to love it, but then it just kept going on in an aimless way. The jokes were definitely landing in the first half, especially the gag with the two cowboys pulling all of the French objects out of the Frenchman's suitcase, but the last 10 minutes or so felt disconnected and aimless. It's a treat to see Harry Dean Stanton, Jack Nance, and Michael Horse all together though.

There's nothing I can say about this film that I'm sure someone else here hasn't said better. It's funny that the last film that my wife and I saw in theaters before our son was born was a vampire movie (Nosferatu), and the first one we saw in theaters after he was born was a vampire movie.
