Director Jacques Tourneur is usually known for his horror films with Val Lewton, but this earnest (almost to a fault) drama about a turn of the century small town being affected by a new pistol-packing Parsons rolling into town with the word of god and a lot of tough love life lessons.
Melodramatic but great dialogue and Joel McCrae is such a MANLY Man of God in a great role.
Plus, any movie where two characters named “Uncle Famous” and “Chloroforn Wiggins” exchanging pleasantries is worth a viewing.
Also…look at little Dean Stockwel….Crazy!
Unconventionally Good film from a genre great.
