This movie is so dumb but “Life is pain and we've got to scrape the joy out of it every chance we get” are pretty great words to live by, so maybe it’s not so dumb after all.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

Give me Jeff Goldblum’s lanky, awkward physicality over Chris Pratt’s macho, mimbo, I-can-do-anything heroism any day. I just wish The Lost World had a better story, and especially some interesting villains. You can feel Spielberg’s disinterest in pretty much any scene that doesn’t involve frenetic dino action; at least the two big T. rex sequences — the one with the dangling trailer and then the rampage through San Diego — are showstoppers.

Also, someone beats a dinosaur with gymkata. That’s not nothing.

The Firm

Pollack was a solid director in this conspiracy thriller genre; this isn’t on par with one of my all-time favorites Three Days of the Condor, but it has flashes, like the entertaining chase sequence involving a slow-moving train and a hitman played by future Jigsaw Tobin Bell. The score by Dave Grusin is deliciously moody and the cast is absurdly stacked: Gene Hackman and Ed Harris and Hal Holbrook and Holly Hunter and Gary Busey and David Strathairn and Wilford…
