This doc mirrors the films themselves, in the sense that it lays it all out there. There’s no hiding behind empty platitudes the way there’s no hiding behind camera cuts or CGI stunts. The original directors fight, the financing falls through, the studio demands changes (some as silly as “Keanu Reeves should not have a beard”). Yes, there’s some self-congratulation, but you also understand by the end why John Wick stands head and shoulders above the competition: Because they’re made by people who won’t accept anything less than their absolute best, pain be damned.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is so funny in this movie that watching it made me actively sad.

Guys, I hate to break it to you, but this movie is NOT about Ana de Armas doing ballet.

A documentary that gets a little Lumpy at times.

When I was little, kids would dare each other to make and drink “suicides” from the soda fountain by filling a cup with every single option in the machine. Each individual flavor was great; together they were disgusting, hence the nature of the dare.

If that beverage was a TV show, it would be The Paul Lynde Halloween Special. So many odd and contradictory elements! Paul Lynde! Donny & Marie! Betty White! The actual Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz! Kiss! Florence Henderson singing a disco song for some reason! More Kiss!

Just absolutely unhinged trainwreck television. Plus: Free refills!

The fact that George Lucas spent 35 years tweaking and tinkering with and then re-releasing every notable piece of Star Wars media in every possible format and even he was like "This thing is totally unsalvageable, we must quarantine it so it cannot harm our valuable brand, bury it in the back of the warehouse from Raiders of the Lost Ark” tells you everything you need to know about this turd.

Chewbacca has a mother and a son in this TV special. They were never seen — or even referenced — ever again. Is Chewie a deadbeat dad???

I really relate to Hansel because I’m really really really ridiculously good-looking and also Sting would be another person who’s a hero to me. The music he’s created over the years, I don’t really listen to it. But the fact that he’s making it, I respect that.

How many times have I watched this movie without noticing that Mugatu is wearing a garbage bag ascot (complete with drawstring bow tie) in the final scene?!?

If you’re gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough.

This is the movie from the 1994 Jim Carrey trifeca (after Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask) that I have seen the least, but it is almost certainly the funniest. Whenever I revisit it, I’m surprised how many moments have seeped their way into my subconscious. I think I don’t know it that well. Then a line pops up — like “Pills are good! Pills are GOOD!” — and I discover I have been quoting Dumb and Dumber for 30 years without realizing it.

“Can you at least tell me where he was?”

“If I knew where he was, I assure you, you'd be the first to know, as he’s put me in a somewhat awkward position. I’m desperate neither for incarceration nor unemployment.”

“Well allow me to assist. But if it later transpires that you’re being somewhat disingenuous —”

“Oh, I would not dare be mendacious with an official dressed in that houndstooth.”

Somehow, this is actual dialogue from this movie; I would not dare be mendacious with Letterboxd s.

There’s quite a bit of tension here for a talking head documentary about a famous comedian. That comedian, Paul Reubens — better known (at times only known) as Pee-wee Herman — was an enormously private person, not to mention an exacting (okay controlling) artist. At times, he spars with the documentary’s director during interviews — often in a playful way, but sometimes with more obvious frustration and disappointment. He repeatedly mentions his desire to co-direct the project, and perhaps to interview its other talking heads himself to ensure they deliver the quotes he wants to find their way into the miniseries. Even as he’s telling his story on camera, Reubens occasionally looks like he regrets the decision to participate in this doc. (Later, we learn he stopped cooperating with it completely for a while.)

To say Reubens kept the filmmakers at arm’s length feels like an understatement; a title card that opens the movie states Pee-wee as Himself’s creators had no idea Reubens was battling cancer the entire time they spoke with him for the film. Frankly, stretches of this miniseries feel vague and unclear, especially the ones about Reuben’s life away from the spotlight, despite the fact that it runs well over three hours long. Insofar as a Pee-wee fan might want a genuinely candid tell-all, one could argue that leaves Pee-wee as Himself as a bit of a disappointment. Perhaps, though, an incomplete portrait speaks to a deeper truth about Reubens, or rather who Reubens wanted to appear to be. This man wore that slim gray suit and red bowtie like armor.

Effectively communicates the degree to which Shandling was a tortured genius — and how a horrible childhood trauma birthed and stoked that genius at times, and blunted and diminished it at others.

A lot of us have moments where we wish were as funny or as successful as someone like Garry Shandling; this film really shows the double-edged sword of all of that success. Shandling was driven to do these things mostly because of the tragic loss of his brother at a young age. Once he achieved what he set out to do in show business, he felt an enormous pressure to maintain it. Bob Saget tells an amazing story about Shandling walking off stage following his very first Tonight Show appearance. Within seconds, Shandling burst into tears and asked him “What do I do now?” He did not enjoy achieving his lifelong ambition for even five minutes before it began to gnaw at him that he would now somehow have to find a way to top himself. That’s rough.

Graverobbing, corpse defiling, child murder, brains in jars; pre-code horror was wild.

A lovely father/son story, a clever allegory for a child’s relationship with their first dog, an amazing score, and exciting flight sequences. That’s a winning combination.

Conventional wisdom states that both male leads are miscast, and perhaps catastrophically so. 

Once in a while, conventional wisdom is absolutely correct. Sinatra would have made a great Sky;  he’s a so-so Nathan. (His “Luck Be a Lady” elsewhere is timeless.) And Brando he, uh, can’t sing. Like, at all. That tends to be an issue in a musical.

I am McLovin! yet what I am who cares, or knows?
My friends forsake me like a memory lost.
I am McLovin the self-consumer of my woes,
They rise and vanish, an oblivious host,
Shadows of life, whose very soul is lost.
And yet I am McLovin—I live—though I am toss'd

While this is a funny movie, I am not sure anything in it is funnier than this sentence from the film’s Wikipedia page: “Mintz-Plasse was 17 at the time of filming Superbad, and as a result, his mother was required to be present on set during the filming of his sex scene.”

“You’ve been planning an alien invasion in my Costco?”

Everyone has a couple movies that seemingly no one likes but them. The ones they own on Blu-ray and then when a friend comes over and they look at your collection they’re like “Why do you have the movie where Vince Vaughn fights Cousin Greg?” before they realize you enjoy it and they feel awkward for shaming you about it.

I have The Watch. It’s funny!

Wing walking is an art older than sound cinema. Before movies included spoken dialogue, they were already filled with daredevils who risked — and sometimes lost — their lives performing incredible feats in and on top of airplanes. So when producer/star Tom Cruise and producer/co-writer/director Christopher McQuarrie turned the climax of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning into maybe the greatest display of wing walking and aerial stunt work in the last 50 years, that’s wasn’t a haphazard choice. It was a decision designed to further the mission of this franchise for the last three decades: To thrill moviegoers with old-fashioned Hollywood spectacle on the grandest scale possible.

It’s impossible for me to give a negative review to a movie with a climax as good as the one that concludes The Final Reckoning; Cruise hanging off a biplane hundreds of feet in the air is more than worth the price of ission all by itself. But it’s also possible that the rest of The Final Reckoning is a mess, and ranks near the bottom of this long-running franchise.

Eephus is such a wonderful title for this unhurried, deceptively simple movie. It really sneaks up on you. I’ll also note that many of the other names for the eephus pitch listed on Wikipedia — including balloon ball, blooper ball, gondola, parachute, and gravity curve — would also suit the movie.

Damn, I wish I knew some scruffy coots I could play some old man baseball with. Or at least to drink a couple ’Gansetts with.

Of all the bad ways to die in a movie, getting squished and impaled (and also electrocuted I think?) in an elevator shaft has to be among the worst.

The Mission: Impossible series would get a lot bigger than this. It would only get a little better. The big Tom Cruise/Henry Czerny confrontation culminating in the aquarium explosion is still an all-time franchise highlight. (Those crazy canted camera angles! Also why is the aquarium so big??? Who cares!) And obviously dangling above the Langley computer is iconic. Plus, De Palma sneaks in some fun (and diegetic) split screens — like when Cruise is in the phone booth at extreme frame left, or when that deadly elevator is going up and down on frame right and you can see who’s waiting for it on each floor at screen left. It is a little funny how this film was seen as this lumbering beast of a blockbuster in 1996, and today it is easily the smallest of the eight films. (It’s barely 105 minutes long minus credits!)

The boggart — the embodiment of your greatest fear, which can only be defused with humor — is the whole film in miniature. Prisoner of Azkaban has all of the series’ scariest moments so far (the Grim, the Dementors) and many of the broadest (Harry’s balloon of an aunt, the Knight Bus, scaring the Slytherins with the invisibility cloak, every single second Emma Thompson is onscreen).

The boggart assumes many forms, and so do most of the characters this time; the werewolf and the various animagus. (There is also a theme of doubles, which includes Hermoine’s subplot.) The whole movie is about confronting the terrors of the adult world (bodily transformations make an effective puberty allegory), and learning to live with them.

Me at 31: Eh, this movie is fine.

Me at 44: This movie in no way speaks to my life, my marriage, my children, or my career. Like, in any way. And for reasons that are 100 percent unrelated and disconnected from that, I find this movie a lot funnier than I did when I had no children and had only been married for like three years.

One has nothing to do with the other. I’m not like this. My family’s not like this. At all.

I swear.

A fun drinking game: Take a shot when anyone involved in the XFL blames “the media” for the failure of their crappy football league. (And by “fun” I mean “potentially lethal.”)

Not one of the best 30 For 30s, but I tell you what: The greatest basketball player in the world retires to pursue his father’s dream of playing baseball and gradually wins over the skeptical staff of a minor league team? That’s a helluva idea for a Bull Durham legacyquel.

Logline: Tom Cruise plays a spy who must defeat the most powerful computer ever created by running really fast, jumping a motorcycle off a cliff, and doing close-up magic.

Cinema.

Paul Rudd looks younger than Seth Rogen in this movie, and he’s the one playing the father of two kids, and he was born in 1969. At this point it’s a cliché to joke about how Rudd never ages, but seriously: Are we sure Highlander isn’t a documentary and he isn’t one of them? I haven’t seen the Kurgan in a while; is it at all possible Paul Rudd decapitated him and absorbed his Quickening in order to claim The Prize? Someone should look into this.

Things movies and baseball have in common:

-Hits.

-Pitches.

-Home runs.

-Blockbusters (movies and trades).

-Summer is the key season for both.

-Budget is a crucial factor in success — but not the only one.

-Victories are a team effort, and each team is comprised of stars and role players.

-The Show: that’s what players call the Majors, and what crew call each job.

-Veterans of both worlds will tell you if you want to succeed, it’s best not to intellectualize why something works. In other words: Don’t think.

In my limited experience, this really nails the sleepy, dreamy vibe of soaking up the sun on a Mediterranean beach. It feels like the one vacation I took in this sort of place. (Mine had way less sexual intrigue, but otherwise the tone is right on.)

Now: Whether a sleepy, dreamy vibe is a good thing for a psychological drama about the tension between a permissive father and an adventurous daughter, that is up for debate.

This is uncommonly good-looking for this sort of doc. They did a great job of capturing the flavor of the look of the show in the talking heads. That added a lot. So did the sheer amount of interviews; just about everyone is in this. It’s made with obvious love for this show, which is echoed by all the interviewees, who are equally ionate about this wonderful thing that they made that was just a few years ahead of its time. (If it is developed in a world where it could play on basic cable or streaming, it surely could have hung around long enough to capture the full four years of the geeks’ high school careers.)

I’m sure some people lie about this now, but it’s true for me: I watched the show when it was on the air. And it was hard to watch; not because it was on on Saturday nights (I was a total loser and I had very few Saturday night plans), but because a lot of weeks it just wouldn’t air for some reason. But it was so true and so funny and so painful that it was worth the effort. TV is so easy to watch now; so many things are available 24/7 at a click. And that is probably for the better for most shows. But you did feel like you were a part of the coolest thing ever made about uncool people when Freaks and Geeks was on the air.

Interesting as a double feature with Black Bag in that both are genre-based domestic dramas built on familial trust and possible betrayals. This one has more formal trickery thanks to the POV camerawork, but it’s also got way too many subplots for my taste. A low-key horror story about a wayward spirit is more than enough, especially when you’re telling that story from the perspective of the ghost. The melodrama about the mom who seems to detest her daughter, the sleazy boyfriend, the OJ, it all seemed to clash with the naturalistic vibe of the floating camera. It’s a fairly engaging experiment, but Black Bag is more of my bag. And in of this style of first-person cinema, give me Nickel Boys any day.

-I was an impressionable wannabe cinephile in the late 1990s when Soderbergh started hitting with one stylish film after another. I saw every single one in the theater; Out of Sight, The Limey, Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven. Those movies are burned into my brain. Decades later, it’s fun when a slinky bass line starts poking through the score, I can think to myself “Oh, Soderbergh brought David Holmes back to do the score, that’s great.” Getting old sucks. But having a connection with the work of a particular filmmaker stretching back almost 30 years is pretty cool. 

-I was not prepared for the “Agatha Christie whodunit but way hornier” vibes. Nor was I prepared for how much that would be my thing. 

-Fundamentally, the film’s appeal is quite simple: In any scene, from moment to moment, I could never predict what was going to happen. That’s rare, and a lot of fun.

Thank God I’m not a Buffalo Bills fan.

I’m sure Reggie Miller is a fine human being. But I just hate him so much.

You’ll never believe it but this Marvel movie has a couple characters that feel like real people. They have feelings! They think the world sucks and they don’t know what to do about it! And then, yeah, there’s a bunch of punching and kicking and bantering too. But it’s also a superhero movie with actual human beings in it. What a concept.

A Marvel movie that ends at the title character’s grave, that’s about kidnapping, state-sanctioned human trafficking, and multiple parents who willfully turn their children into brainwashed assassins — with more wacky Russian accents than a Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon and two of the funniest ing characters (Red Guardian and Yelena) in the entire MCU. Go figure.
