It's brutal and extreme and not for everyone, but Terrifier 2 is also engaging from beginning to end, and shows an exponential growth in writer/director Damien Leone's filmmaking. The movie looks much better than its predecessor, and this time around we have a real protagonist in Sienna, played brilliantly by Lauren LaVera. Leone takes his time developing the character and her family, with really good dialogue and pacing. (I love, for example, when the mom yells at Sienna's brother to…

An incredible mix of humor and atmosphere, along with significant growth for our monster. I love the original film, and Bride makes it look very simple in comparison. The ending is perfect, from dialogue to theme, with the monster finally achieving agency and proving he's more human than his makers.

I loved Steven Kostanski‘s Psycho Goreman and here he delivers another film in that vein - one committed to ‘80s filmmaking with puppets, miniatures, and stop motion. It’s a blast to watch. It’s also very funny, though sometimes the characters become too absurd and the jokes fall flat. But it’s still totally charming and so much fun. (P.S. I NEED a Frankie Freako puppet for my office.)

Kicked off spooky season with a family viewing. Frank is my favorite of the Universal Monsters and I still find him tragic and captivating. In an ultimate testament to the lasting appeal of the movie (now close to 100 years old), it held my 9- and 6-year-old’s attention for the entire runtime, and they had lots of questions and theories afterward. A true masterpiece.
