It's interesting how Memphis, but USA broadly, is seen as tangibly inferior or at least relatively unremarkable compared to the couple's home city of Yokohama. It is a place frozen in time at the summit of American cultural hegemony, but it is run-down, tired, and empty. The United States of America as a country on its knees in poverty, racism, and social discontent kept alive and dreaming by the magic and influence of The King and the past that never was.
