Whether you're seeing it as a first-time viewer or revisiting the series for the hundredth time, it's easy to agree that American Pie holds a pivotal space in the teen comedy circuit as a definitive cultural artifact of the turn of the millennium, and of the genre leaning towards raunch that was previously saved for slapstick stories. Modern high school students rushing to lose their virginity is almost an unspoken established rite of age, which is why Paul Weitz's film feels like a timeless representation of American youth that has an ability to connect with the audience on an intrinsic level.

Through the tight-knit friend group on screen, this follows a realistic and relatable ensemble of characters who engage you with their edgy banter, quirky love affairs, and endless one-liners, which relaunched the idea of the 'quest for sex' film. Even the unrated home video version, which only extends the running time by a mere ten seconds, preserves these sensibilities with outlandish padded humor and a voyeuristic eye. American Pie is a feel-good flick with an exceptional soundtrack and recently restored visual flair, making this the perfect contender for Filmmaker Mode on an LG OLED TV, presenting accurate color details and picture lighting as they would appear from the original negatives.

American Pie was screened using the 2025 88 Films 4K UHD remaster with HDR.

Let’s be honest, two of these three stars are because Mary Elizabeth Winstead holds this movie on her back. Every generation of horror needs franchises to turn your brain off and have some fun. Final Destination is just that. Not the best installment in the franchise but no doubt plays big on either a big screen or something along the lines of what LG OLED puts out on the market.

I still maintain upon a rewatch that Companion is a blast from start to finish and that it's more successful as a Coen Brothers-esque "idiots in way over their heads" dark crime comedy than it is as a "big tech" satire. Perhaps heavily emphasizing in the marketing that this was "From the Producers of Barbarian" somewhat inflated expectations, for this doesn't have the big, gear-shift twists and sense of discovery that Zach Cregger's film had, but it is still effective as a bloody, high-concept chamber piece that finds Sophie Thatcher on her way to be the next big genre performer following Yellowjackets and Heretic, and Jack Quaid leaning in the smarmy part of his persona to be a watchable, yet deeply unlikable weasel.

And in case I didn't emphasize it enough up top, Companion is frequently hilarious in a deranged way and has enough twists of its own to keep you on your toes. A fair amount of the back half of the film is set at night, both outside and within the confines of a house with a power outage, so watching this with LG OLED's Perfect Black mode helped see these darker scenes much more clearly. I showed this to my wife, who isn't a big horror person and would never dare watch Barbarian, but I had said it was more of a sci-fi dark comedy that does get gruesome, and she loved it. I can't think of better praise.

Even though I don’t 1000% love the plot, there’s no denying that this film is incredibly technically beautiful. THAT fight scene is so exhilarating and watching on an LG OLED TV in Filmmaker Mode made it even more exciting on a rewatch.

I don’t think that Leigh Whannell gets enough credit for the direction in this and The Invisible Man - two of the most interestingly shot films I’ve seen in years, and Logan Marshall Green certainly doesn’t get enough credit for his nuanced performance - the way he can switch between himself and STEM in his body is so unreal to watch.

The outlier of the franchise, 1985's A Nightmare on Elm Street: Freddy's Revenge, makes for a darker and grittier companion piece to the original. Despite it breaking every Freddy Krueger rule in the book, it's still fun and features one of the best practical effect gags in horror history (IYKYK). As Jesse (Mark Patton) struggles with himself, he must face his fears head-on if he has any chance of survival. Turning on LG OLED's Filmmaker mod brings even more detail to the images set forth on the screen. It's a special experience that heightens Freddy's disturbing transfer into the real world. The BBQ/pool party scene, especially, has never been so vivid and downright terrifying. Try it; you'll never sleep again.

Review by Tyler Geis

With Steven Soderbergh doubling as a director and cinematographer on this film (under the name of Peter Andrews), Black Bag is yet another entry in his filmography that plays absolutely perfectly on an LG OLED TV screen. The colors and ambiance of every scene in Black Bag come off as a real treat for the eyes.

As for the plot, Soderbergh does it again with his art house avant-garde approach to taking common concepts we see in big-budget summer blockbusters but takes it down a notch in spectacle and has you invested in the story and characters. Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett deliver as a couple who work in the world of espionage. George (Fassbender) becomes suspicious that his wife, Kathryn (Blanchett), may be committing treason.

Rather than turning this into a Mr. and Mrs. Smith sort of film, Soderbergh directs the film with a pacing that at first may seem jarring, but by the time its 93-minute run time reaches a conclusion, it completely catches you off guard with the reveal at the end.

Get ready for two incredible dinner party scenes, by the way.

Review by Steven Thomas

Best film of all time or worst film of all time? That is the question. Wherever you stand concerning The Room, it goes without saying that Tommy Wiseau's directorial debut is a true auteurist vision. Unlike any other romantic drama before or after its conception, The Room captures a highly uncanny and generally melodramatic allure to appeal to a wider audience. Set almost completely in a San Francisco apartment building which acts like a revolving door for a vast amount of quirky soap opera characters, the film presents a story about a love triangle all too realistic in its sense of lust and betrayal.

What was initially a box office bomb due to the decidedly unconventional execution of its tone, script, and atmosphere, this serves today as an entirely original, elevated black comedy fueled by an incredible roster of unknown actors and the real-life relationship between Wiseau and his co-lead, Greg Sestero. Had any other independent director helmed this work, it is hard to tell whether its midnight movie legacy and cult status would remain. I'd argue that The Room is the perfect film to view with an LG OLED TV in Filmmaker Mode, if not to giggle at the green screen rooftop action, to preserve its unique blend of 35mm and digitally shot sequences.

The Room was screened using the 2018 Wiseau-Films blu-ray transfer.

What a devastating familial drama wrapped around a vampiric tale. Director Jonathan Cuartas often uses the power of suggestion for gore (and the ending) to deliver the punches, and that’s honestly so effective. With LG Oled's filmmaker mode, everything is turned up to 11, giving the emotional beats more weight. To say it's an impressive piece of indie filmmaking is an understatement. Paul Rudd and Jason Segel, with a touch of Rashida Jones, is just what the doctor prescribed.

I Love You, Man is one of my favorite films not because of the storyline (it's ridiculous, but somewhat credible), but the laughs. There are some really smart one-liners throw about, and mostly improvised, but it's the chemistry between Rudd and Segel that brings everything full circle. Funny enough, you would think the film was directed by Judd Apatow, but it wasn't (John Hamburg also directed Along Came Polly, which stars Ben Stiller and features the late Philip Seymour Hoffman as a washed up actor.

To prepare for the inevitable laughter, I turned the lights down low, switched to LG OLED's Perfect Black, and let the film (and TV) do the talking. The results: Nonstop laughter.

Final thoughts:

Bobcat Goldthwaite's WILLOW CREEK doesn't re-invent the found footage genre; it just executes its scares really, really well. The Bigfoot legend depends on grainy, hard-to-see video clips of creatures in the woods, and WILLOW CREEK -- especially with LG OLED's Filmmaker Mode on -- encourages us to examine every frame for something hiding in the trees. The centerpiece of the film is an extremely long single-take sequence as the characters are trapped in their tent by something outside, and it's a shiver-inducing 'Squatchy treat.

Donnie Darko is the stuff of absolute nightmares. With LG OLED's Filmmaker Mode, the images really pop off the screen and give further depth to Richard Kelly's manic storyboard of a young teen gone off the deep end. It's a terrifying, almost biblical portrayal of what happens when things are left unattended in your life. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers one of his all-time best performances, so agonizing that you feel his pain ooze from the TV screen.

In THE DESCENT, a group of women on a cave dive find themselves at the mercy of something evil lurking in the darkness (which, for the record, is perfectly-rendered by LG OLED's Perfect Black). Steven Soderbergh's MAGIC MIKE is why cinema was invented, and LG OLED's Filmmaker Mode shows every hip thrust, gyration, and stomping strip routine exactly as they were meant to be seen. An Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece that doesn't get talked about nearly enough. Farley Granger and John Dall play two chums (or lovers, depending on who you ask) who host a tense dinner party, trying not to let their guests find out that they killed someone moments before everyone arrived. It's shot to look like one take, and in LG OLED's Filmmaker Mode, you can really see the artistry Hitchcock put into each hidden cut.

  • Mission: Impossible

The film that started it all. What the TV series couldn't accomplish, Tom Cruise, as Ethan Hunt, along with a star-studded cast, bring to life on the big screen. And by "big screen", we mean with your LG OLED device, which is full of features that bring more life to the films you're watching.

  • Mission: Impossible II

When a film is directed by John Woo (Face/Off, Broken Arrow), you're in for a ride. More twists and turns that the previous film, Cruise and team deliver another powerful entry to the series. Also, speaking of powerful, experience the full effects of the film with an LG OLED TV!

  • Mission: Impossible III

This feature film directorial debut from J.J. Abrams (LOST, Super 8), one of the highest-grossing films of 2006, is full of Easter eggs galore (If you know Abrams' work, then you know he loves to throw them into his film and TV projects). Aside from all the action, the film gave us a fantastic performance from the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman as the villain. Given the dark nature of the film, Perfect Black is a great feature to activate when watching.

  • Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

The fourth film in the Mission: Impossible series, Ghost Protocol, takes a turn when, after a bombing at the Kremlin, Ethan and the now-shutdown IMF go rogue. It also features one of the greatest stunts ever pulled, done by Cruise himself, where he dangles from the Burj Khalifa tower without a stunt double. You have to see it to believe it (and you can, perfectly, with LG OLED's Filmmaker Mode feature, which displays the film just the way the filmmakers intended it to be seen!).

  • Minari

Minari, stars Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Mayhem), who wants to experience the American dream with his family. In order to do so, they to Arkansas, where they face a number of both changes and obstacles. Fantastic performances and a great storyline make this one of 2020's best films, which happened to have won a Best ing Actress award at the Academy Awards. Make sure to watch it with Filmmaker Mode on your LG OLED!

  • Takers

This isn't The Town or Heat, but Takers is a film that separates itself from the latter and serves its own action on a platter, especially with one of the greatest chase scenes seen on screen. Activate Perfect Black on your LG OLED, and you'll feel like you're part of the action!

  • Enter the Dragon

If Bruce Lee stars in a film, you know what to expect: A ton of martial arts action and fun! While the film may be over 50 years old, it's still a timeless classic, and is best-viewed with an LG OLED device for an amazing watching experience!

  • Shanghai Noon

What do you get when you pair Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson together? It's not what you expect from this unlikely pair in this comedy/western film, but it works while making us laugh along the way (and even gave us a sequel, Shanghai Knights). Seeing the film with an LG OLED is an experience of itself, but what about the sound? Since you're going to be laughing throughout, try the Clear Voice Pro or Dynamic Sound Booster features.

The 2000s were a special era in film. A new millennium offered endless possibilities for visual storytelling, and filmmaking shifted immensely on its axis.

Today, LG OLED takes that spirit of innovation even further. 10 Opening Scenes That Set the Film's Tone h4y3b https://letterboxd.zoneani.me/lgoled/list/10-opening-scenes-that-set-the-films-tone/ letterboxd-list-49192229 Tue, 23 Jul 2024 10:18:34 +1200

When watching a film, many of us are left waiting for either the action to begin or the storyline to evolve. However, there are some films that deliver both before the title card even appears.

For this list, we chose 10 films that gained our interest before the film was introduced. To make the experience even greater, LG OLED TVs feature two fantastic features, Filmmaker Mode and Perfect Black, that will enhance your viewing experience!

Click the 'Read Notes' button for more details about each film.

  • Scream

Everyone thought Drew Barrymore was the lead. She was even front and center on the poster art. But Wes Craven twists the knife in the delicious ways to give us one of the most graphic opening scenes in all of horror.

    -Bee

  • Halloween

John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN begins with a sequence shot from the point of view of a young Michael Myers, making us look through his eyes as he slaughters his sister. It's disturbing as all hell.

    -Eric

  • Dawn of the Dead

A few years after the success of 28 Days Later, Zach Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake also stepped up the zombie subgenre by introducing fast-moving (running) zombies.

Before the title card appears, we're treated to a little over ten minutes of a backstory and plenty of action. While the opening credits and title card are not to be missed, the few heart-pounding moments we see set the stage for what's to come. And boy, it's not a pretty scene from that point forward (in a good way)!

    -Brett

  • The Player

Robert Altman's 1992 film opens with an 8-minute long take. The camera begins on a movie set and pulls back until we're exploring the backlot, following various characters as they walk-and-talk around the studio. There are conversations captured through windows, multiple character introductions, important closeups, and even birds-eye-view crane angles, all in one fluid shot. A master at work.

    -Eric

  • Belzebuth

There are few opening scenes that get under my skin quite like Belzebuth's. It's ruthlessly bleak and will assuredly leave a bleeding smudge on the brain. Trust me. Just watch it.

    -Bee

  • It Follows

I suggest going into this film without reading anything about it. It's beautifully shot and well-acted, but what's important about the film is what's not seen.

The film opens with a frightening sequence, focusing on a girl that the camera follows in a one-shot sequence. If that grabs your attention, wait until you see the rest of the fight and what unfolds.

    -Brett

  • Raiders of the Lost Ark

There are few opening scenes more iconic than the image of Indiana Jones outrunning that rolling stone. Thanks to this whole sequence, you know exactly what kind of adventure you're in for: nonstop thrills, Indy looking impossibly cool, and of course, that score.

    -Eric

  • The Crazies

The remake to George Romero's classic sets the tone immediately in a small remote town in middle America. A baseball game is interrupted by, in some ways, an act of violence, which slowly begins to rattle the community with terrible effects. What is then revealed is far worse than anything imagined, but the opening scene(s) sets the tone for what's to come. George would be proud of this film!

    -Brett

  • Evil Dead Rise

File this under: epic title cards. Even before Evil Dead Rise glides out of the trees and across the screen, the opening sets the grisly tone for one of the franchise's best entries. It is, dare I say, scalp snatching.

    -Bee

  • The Lion King

As the sun rises on the African plain, a song bursts into being: "Nants ingonyama bagithi baba!" That opening number, "The Circle of Life," is one of the best songs in all of animated film, and the visuals that accompany it -- various animals traveling to witness the newborn King -- are downright stunning.

No metaphors, no vague vibes, just actual places on the map. Cities, neighborhoods, countries — as long as it's specific enough to type into Google Maps, it counts.

In these below 8 films, the city isn’t just a backdrop — it’s part of the story, part of the mood, part of what stays with you long after the credits roll.

And if you want to feel that exactly the way the filmmaker intended? There’s a way for that.

LG OLED’s Filmmaker Mode preserves the original colors, frame rate — no weird filters, no over-sharpening, just pure cinema, like sitting in the perfect dark room, anywhere, anytime.

8 films. 8 cities. Best experienced as they were meant to be.

Love Your Bookshop Day 621n22 From Print to the Big (or Small) Screen https://letterboxd.zoneani.me/lgoled/list/love-your-bookshop-day-from-print-to-the/ letterboxd-list-50041299 Tue, 13 Aug 2024 10:56:04 +1200

To celebrate Love Your Bookshop Day, which is an Australian holiday that occurs every August 14th, our list reflects some of our favorite films from different genres that made it from print to the big (or small) screen.

What are your favorite books that turned into films?

Click the READ NOTES button for more details about each film.

  • The Ritual

Adam Nevill's words come to pulsating vitality thanks to filmmaker David Bruckner, who crafts an unsettling forage into the wilderness that injects nightmares directly into the brain. Without his sly direction, the film wouldn't be able to match the book image-for-image in away that makes it a unforgettable experience. -Bee

  • Gone Girl

Gillian Flynn's original novel is a fun, self-consciously-pulpy read, but in David Fincher's hands, the story becomes one of the best films of the 2010s. Thanks to killer performances from Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, 'Gone Girl' is a sleek, twisted thriller about the different kinds of pain we inflict on those we love. -Eric

  • Hellraiser

What's there to say about The Hellbound Heart and its film adaptation Hellraiser? Both boil your blood and make you drink it. It's sensual, provocative, and altogether chilling. -Bee

  • East of Eden

Elia Kazan chose to adapt only the latter sections of the John Steinbeck novel, allowing him to zero in on the relationship between brothers Cal and Aron. This was James Dean's first major role -- the only one released before he died -- and his performance is a masterclass in taking what's on the page and adding layer upon layer of physically-paralyzing teenage angst. -Eric

  • Nightbreed

I'm a bit biased when it comes to Nightbreed. It's my favorite horror film and I've had the opportunity to speak about it multiple times. It's the X-Men of horror, where the real monsters appear in human form, and the monsters and their special abilities are the most humane. Clive Barker's book Cabal is a fantastic read, but I highly recommend watching the theatrical cut of the film (The Cabal Cut is what's now mostly available on all platforms and streaming services). -Brett

  • The Mist

This short story from Stephen King's book Skeleton Crew pits a group of locals trapped in a supermarket surrounded by a mysterious evil outside. While the story was effective in its scares, Frank Darabont's film enhanced them. The characters are fantastically cast (and you'll recognize many of them from other Darabont films), but the creatures are what really shine here. Kudos to the special effects teams that brought our worst nightmares to reality (onscreen, of course). However scary the monsters are, the real evil are the people themselves and what they'll do to survive. This is a serious must-watch! -Brett

  • The Wizard of Oz

There had already been numerous film adaptations of L. Frank Baum's "Oz" stories by the time Victor Fleming directed the 1939 version, and his still stands as the definitive incarnation of the source material. It's a Technicolor wonder, a perfect example of bringing an imaginative story to even more imaginative life. -Eric

  • American Psycho

Bret Easton Ellis' novel of the same name is far more gruesome and detailed than the 2000 film starring Christian Bale. The book goes into incredible detail about Patrick Bateman's rampages, as well as chapters (literally pages upon pages) about albums from a number of 80s artists. While I prefer the novel over the film, both are still incredible pieces of work, but please do skip over American Psycho 2, starring Mila Kunis. -Brett

  • Misery

A story that never goes out of style, 'Misery' is a timeless story about fan culture, obsession, and the creative catharsis of writing. Kathy Bates' deranged performance elevates the material into the stratosphere, allowing the audience to shift uncomfortably in their seat. -Bee

9 Films Set in Paris to Get You Hyped for the Olympics 65m https://letterboxd.zoneani.me/lgoled/list/9-films-set-in-paris-to-get-you-hyped-for/ letterboxd-list-49528417 Wed, 31 Jul 2024 11:02:43 +1200

The Olympics, which are being held in Paris on July 26, 2024 – August 11, 2024, are all about celebrating athletes from countries around the world. Since the games will be televised, you won't see much of Paris' beautiful setting, so we chose 9 films to help provide a better picture of what we're/you're missing.

Be sure to click the 'Read Notes' button for more details.

  • Moulin Rouge!

A little razzle dazzle does the trick in this Nicole Kidman-starring flick. A jukebox musical, the film gives Kidman ample room to show off - alongside quite a cast of big pop names, including P!nk, Christina Aguilera and Lil Kim. It's a feast for both the eyes and ears.

    -Bee

  • A Mermaid in Paris

A wonderful, whimsical fairytale about a romance between a siren in the Seine and a man who believes that art can save the world.

    -Eric

  • An American Werewolf in Paris

While certain pieces of the film were actually filmed in Paris, we're given a small look at what a beautiful city it is. That aside, I wish I can say the same for the film.

    -Brett

  • Knife+Heart

In true Giallo fashion, Knife+Heart goes heavy on the style, treating the audience to exquisite tone, camera work, and framing. It's an absolutely deadly delight that pushes the genre boundaries but makes sure to celebrate the conventions we've all come to adore about the genre.

    -Bee

  • Under Paris

One of the better shark films to emerge over the last decade, Under Paris offers beautiful views of the city, including the Seine, but mostly of the destruction caused by the sharks that flood it and cause death and destruction. While the film meddles in climate change-related issues, it's the sharks that are the true stars of the film, with the humans just serving as bait (literally).

    -Brett

  • An American in Paris

Vicente Minnelli's musical vision of Paris is a Technicolor dream, featuring swoon worthy scenes of the city coming to life and, well, a swoon worthy Gene Kelly dancing through it all.

    -Eric

  • As Above, So Below

Down inside the catacombs stretching gnarled fingertips beneath Paris, there lies dark evil forces beyond human control. It's a claustrophobic affair, even before shadows begin to move and a film crew are push to the brink. It's one of the found footage genre's finest offerings; it's enough to make the blood curdle and your veins pop.

    -Bee

  • Taken

You may watch Taken for the action, which it offers plenty of, but the scenes filmed in Paris are breathtaking (during the scenes where the action takes a break).

    -Brett

  • A New Kind of Love

Paul Newman woos Joanne Woodward -- even though he thinks she's a call girl -- in this sex farce from the 1960s. If you're looking for delightfully silly French stereotypes, like men on bicycles with bags of baguettes, then this is the movie for you. Full of eye-popping, colorful mod fashion, too!

    -Eric

Looking for something to watch this May?
LG Channels has you covered with free movies on your LG TV.

LG Channels gives you access to over 350+ streaming channels on LG Smart TVs in the U.S—completely free.
With live TV, on-demand programming, and genre-specific picks, there’s always something worth watching.

This month, LG Channels presents 8 rousing films to entertain you!
Why don’t you enjoy these films with your LG OLED, which is full of features that bring more life to the films you're watching.

Check the below list of 8 films along with brief introductions—take a look and see which one captures your heart.

1) Mission: Impossible (1996) 3y375a

The film that started it all. What the TV series couldn't accomplish, Tom Cruise, as Ethan Hunt, along with a star-studded cast, brings to life on the screen. Just as we say, "Well begun is half done, this film, which marks the beginning of the Mission: Impossible series, is an absolute must-watch.

2)Mission: Impossible II (2000) 446y37

When a film is directed by John Woo (Face/Off, Broken Arrow), you're in for a ride. More twists and turns that the previous film, Cruise and team deliver another powerful entry to the series.

3)Mission: Impossible III (2006) byo

This feature film directorial debut from J.J. Abrams (LOST, Super 8), one of the highest-grossing films of 2006, is full of Easter eggs galore (If you know Abrams' work, then you know he loves to throw them into his film and TV projects). Aside from all the action, the film gave us a fantastic performance from the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman as the villain.

4)Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) 4p2e13

The fourth film in the Mission: Impossible series, Ghost Protocol, takes a turn when, after a bombing at the Kremlin, Ethan and the now-shutdown IMF go rogue. It also features one of the greatest stunts ever pulled, done by Cruise himself, where he dangles from the Burj Khalifa tower without a stunt double. You have to see it to believe it.

5)Minari (2020) 5x4k6y

Minari, stars Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Mayhem), who wants to experience the American dream with his family. In order to do so, they to Arkansas, where they face a number of both changes and obstacles. Fantastic performances and a great storyline make this one of 2020's best films, which happened to have won a Best ing Actress award at the Academy Awards.

6)Takers (2010) 65422w

This isn't The Town or Heat, but Takers is a film that separates itself from the latter and serves its own action on a platter, especially with one of the greatest chase scenes seen on screen.

7)Enter the Dragon (1973) 696g4y

If Bruce Lee stars in a film, you know what to expect: A ton of martial arts action and fun! While the film may be over 50 years old, it's still a timeless classic.

8)Shanghai Noon (2000) 5p56e

What do you get when you pair Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson together? It's not what you expect from this unlikely pair in this comedy/western film, but it works while making us laugh along the way (and even gave us a sequel, Shanghai Knights).

It's time to turn on your LG TV and enjoy the films with LG Channels.

In noir, light is fleeting—but darkness tells the truth.

A flickering streetlamp, a cigarette glow, a face half-lost in shadow. These moments aren’t accidents. They’re everything.

That’s where LG OLED comes in. With self-lit pixel technology, it delivers Perfect Black—not just darker darks, but a true absence of light. No blooming, no backlight, no washed-out grays. Just precision. Certified by UL Solutions, LG OLED’s black levels meet the highest global standards, revealing detail black levels in both bright and dark environments.

If your screen can render darkness this perfectly, why not explore the genre that depends on it?

Here are 8 iconic neo-noir films—from the late ‘80s to today—that live in ambiguity, tension, and shadow. 2y185z

235n3w

They don’t just look better on LG OLED. They make you feel real Perfect Black.

1)Blue Velvet (1986) 6x1661

Beneath the suburbs, something twisted lurks. Perfect Black brings David Lynch’s psychological darkness into full, disturbing clarity.

2) Heat (1995) 6f664y

Cops, criminals, and the cold beauty of Los Angeles at night.
With LG OLED, every downtown street and silent standoff glows with tension.

3) The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001) 674j55

Modern noir shot in meticulous black and white. Perfect Black reveals every gradient, shadow, and secret in the Coens’ still, haunted frames.

4) The Insider (1999) 4n4m47

Corporate paranoia and moral compromise, rendered in cool interiors and sterile lighting.
LG OLED brings out the subtle menace hiding in every boardroom shadow.

5) Sin City (2005) 312r34

A stylized world built entirely from contrast—white on black, blood-red on gray.
OLED turns this graphic novel come to life into a true visual knockout.

6) Zodiac (2007) 4k5jt

Journalists, detectives, and sleepless nights in search of a name.
With OLED, the dim glow of obsession and unease becomes almost tactile.

7) Drive (2011) 304u1t

Minimalist style, maximal atmosphere.
Perfect Black gives neon signs and night drives their full emotional power.

8) Nightcrawler (2014) 5h5q1u

Together, we explored one of the most memorable scenes—the sequence where Paul rides Firm's worm—and discussed intricate details you won’t hear anywhere else all while watching the scene on an LG OLED TV.

Don’t wait any longer; check out the video now!

Streaming Week 6e2s1x Best Picks for Mubi https://letterboxd.zoneani.me/lgoled/story/streaming-week-best-picks-for-mubi/ letterboxd-story-28339 Tue, 8 Oct 2024 01:45:20 +1300

LG Electronics (LG) is announcing the LG Streaming Week campaign in 44 countries, starting from September 9 and running through October 13, to celebrate a decade since the initial launch of webOS on the company’s LCD and OLED TVs.

Every week through September and into early October, we're going to feature one streaming service and recommend films from all genres to get you into the Streaming Week spirit. Once again, we're focusing on Amazon Prime Video's streaming service, which boasts one of the largest film libraries. Bee, Brett and Eric chose one film each to highlight below, as well as a Letterboxd list featuring over 15 films from all genres that may better suit your mood. Check out their full list of picks here.

Since early September, we've featured one streaming service and recommend films from all genres to get you into the Streaming Week spirit. Since this is our final list, an end to the celebration, we're highlighting films that you can stream on Mubi, which allows its to stream cult classics to modern masterpieces from a fantastic roster of directors from around the globe.

Lamb emerged as one of the most bizarrely not-quite-horror releases of the last few years. When a childless couple discover a very strange being in their sheep barn, the wife leans into protecting and raising the child as her own. Her husband doesn't quite understand the fixation, but he will soon enough. As the couple grow fonder of their new baby, the flock of sheep become territorial and violent against them. While reading more as a psycho-drama, Lamb works overtime to pull you into the weird and wild world that Valdimar Jóhannsson has created.

2018's Suspiria is a case of a remake outpacing the original. Look, Dario Argento is an icon and his 1977 is groundbreaking. But the Dakota Johnson-starring film expands the world into a horrific hellscape that'll twist the bones and bend the back. Attending a dancing school, Johnson's Suzy Bannon comes across a coven of witches with diabolical plans for her. It doesn't matter how you cut it (from the cinematographer to the more well-rounded story), Suspiria (2018) is one for the history books.

With her new film, The Substance, currently playing in theaters, Coralie Fargeat's 2017 feature debut Revenge is a must-watch. What starts out as a romantic getaway with her married boyfriend, Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz's "Jen" is then by his friends for an impromptu hunting trip. After one friend oversteps his boundaries, all hell breaks loose in this action-packed kill or be killed feature that's riddled with gruesome kills and colorful sets. Fargeat's camerawork is phenomenal and the exquisite settings add a whole new level from this insta-classic, taking us viewers on an incredible trip from beginning to end.

Streaming Week 6e2s1x Best Picks for Amazon Prime Video https://letterboxd.zoneani.me/lgoled/story/streaming-week-best-picks-for-amazon-prime-1/ letterboxd-story-27986 Tue, 1 Oct 2024 06:25:43 +1300

Bee, Brett and Eric chose one film each to highlight below, as well as a Letterboxd list featuring over 15 films from all genres that may better suit your mood. Check out their full list of picks here.

The Neon Demon is among the most bizarre and beautiful modern horror movies. Starring Elle Fanning (as Jesse), Nicolas Winding Refn's feature mines the cultural obsession with fame and the toxicity of chasing trends, likes, and follows. As Jesse climbs higher on the proverbial ladder in the fashion world, she begins to change. Her personality shifts, permitting her to combat her cutthroat rivals. Balancing style and substance, both in equal amounts, The Neon Demon features Fanning in one of her career-defining roles.

Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor are two of the most beautiful stars ever to grace the silver screen, and in Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor are two of the most beautiful stars ever to grace the silver screen, and in Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, they face off as a couple trapped in a loveless marriage. Director Richard Brooks made something claustrophobic and cinematic out of Tennessee Williams' iconic play, and his loving close-ups of his stunning stars look especially great in LG OLED's Filmmaker Mode.

Based on a Stephen King story, The Running Man is easily one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's best films. Filmed in 1987, before smart TVs, social media, and most other technology that we use today, The Running Man centers on a popular television show where convicts are forced to participate in a deadly game of cat & mouse... in front of both a live audience and the world. This form of entertainment is cheap, but it seems to bring everyone together as "Stalkers" chase their prey through an underground, theme-filled arena where the action takes place. Schwarzenegger is in top form here, giving the audience (both in the film as well as viewers of the film) exactly what we came to see: Arnold taking on his enemies one by one, with his usual classic one-liners. While a remake is currently in the works, nothing will ever top this classic.

Streaming Week 6e2s1x Best Picks for Paramount+ https://letterboxd.zoneani.me/lgoled/story/streaming-week-best-picks-for-paramount/ letterboxd-story-27548 Sat, 21 Sep 2024 00:02:51 +1200

LG Electronics (LG) is announcing the LG Streaming Week campaign in 44 countries, starting from September 9 and running through October 13, to celebrate a decade since the initial launch of webOS on the company’s LCD and OLED TVs.

Every week through September, we're going to feature one streaming service and recommend films from all genres to get you into the Streaming Week spirit. To continue our celebration, we're highlighting Paramount+, which offers a number of services, including exclusive originals and live sports, as well as a great catalog of films from all genres.
BeeBrett and Eric chose one film each to highlight below, as well as a Letterboxd list featuring films from all genres that may better suit your mood. Check out their full list of picks streaming on Paramount+ here.

You either love or hate the Paranormal Activity series. In much the same 2021's Wrong Turn sought to inject the franchise with a bit of adrenaline, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin achieved the same. In taking things back in time, the installment allowed a new avenue for spooky storytelling. Packed with scares and mood, the film stakes it claim as among the series best entries - and who could have predicted that? Not even diehard PA fans expected it to handle the material so well. It sure does make the perfect viewing for Halloween. Ready to be scared to death?

Streaming services as a whole could always do better at beefing up their selection of classic films, but Paramount+ has many to pick from. Sunset Boulevard is an enduring classic for a reason: it's a timeless tale of an aging actress desperate for the spotlight, and the story of the struggling screenwriter who promises to get her there. Shot in gorgeous black and white -- made all the more gorgeous by LG OLED's Perfect Black -- Sunset Boulevard still has the capability to shock and thrill, almost 75 years after its release. Paramount+, she's ready for her closeup.

We all love Bruce Willis in the Die Hard franchise, and while he has had a few hits and many misses since those films, 2005's Hostage is one that should not be ignored. Without spoiling the film, which I suggest you go into without reading any full reviews, Willis' character, an ex-hostage negotiator (now police officer) must obtain a few items from a mafia ant's home. However, there's a hostage situation occurring at the very spot he needs to enter. While it sounds ridiculous, it's a well-executed film, from beginning to end, that will have you biting your nails to the very end.

Streaming Week 6e2s1x Best Picks for Apple TV+ https://letterboxd.zoneani.me/lgoled/story/streaming-week-best-picks-for-apple-tv/ letterboxd-story-27289 Tue, 17 Sep 2024 00:57:51 +1200

LG Electronics (LG) is announcing the LG Streaming Week campaign in 44 countries, starting from September 9th and running through October 13th, to celebrate a decade since the initial launch of webOS on the company’s LCD and OLED TVs.

Every week through September, we're going to feature one streaming service and recommend films from all genres to get you into the Streaming Week spirit. This week, we're focusing on Apple's streaming service, Apple TV+. With an incredible library of TV shows to stream, Apple TV+'s film library, while small, packs a bit of a bite (yeah, we threw in a food joke here 🍎), and the ability to rent and/or buy films is one of its greatest features. Below, we chose four films that you can either stream and/or rent/buy through the service (and you can check out the full list of picks here):

Riz Ahmed and Jessie Buckley are two of the best actors of their generation, and in Christos Nikou's FINGERNAILS, it's a joy to watch them fall in love. The movie takes place in a near-future world where a corporation has developed a foolproof test to confirm that you're actually in love: all that's required is you pull out one of your fingernails to be examined. This is a beautifully-filmed romance that looks great in LG OLED's Filmmaker Mode, all about the way we give our dating lives over to technology now when really we should be listening to our hearts.

Who knew that Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds make a fantastic comedic duo? In SPIRITED, Ryan Reynolds' character, Clint Briggs, is in much need of a makeover (attitude-wise). Will Ferrell's "Present" (as in Ghost of Christmas Present) leads the way, but soon rediscovers that it may also be him that needs a makeover. Flashy dance scenes, colorful set (perfect to watch with LG OLED's Filmmaker Mode, and musical numbers fill the film, making it a must-see holiday movie to add to your watchlist.

Duncan Birmingham's WHO INVITED THEM will make you think twice about having a house party. When one couple tends to overstay their welcome, drinks and stories flow... but is this couple who they say they are? We call this one a "polite home invasion," which you need to watch to understand, but it's smart and has a great execution. Birmingham's directing invites its viewers in for a great ride and with great company, both powered by LG OLED's Perfect Black. So, what are you waiting for? An invite? We suggest you just walk right in to this one!

Jesse Moss and Amanda McBain's BOYS STATE is a documentary about a mock government camp in Texas, an excuse for high school boys to come together and learn the ins and outs of state government. We watch as these politically-minded young men feel each other out, determine their policy positions, and discover the power (and dangers) of populism. That may all sound stuffy, but it's not; thanks to the doc's engaging, charismatic characters, this is a very fun watch that sometimes plays more like a political thriller than a documentary. LG OLED's Dolby Atmos sound will even help you catch every line of the movie's overlapping, cinema-verite dialogue.

Dutch Marich is a mastermind behind the camera. With Horror in the High Desert, he crafts such a bone-chilling tale that you won't sleep at night - and that's a guarantee. With LG Oled's dark mode, you'll be swallowed whole by the darkness around you with little else to comfort you or help you cope with the ghostly shadows that seem to peek around the woodlands.

With Halloween creeping in, it's time to get into the holiday spirit. Haunt, from directing duo Beck & Woods, was released in 2019 and is already considered a Halloween season classic due to its incredible setting, fantastic cast, and detailed kills. Because of it's colorful yet dark tone, LG OLED's Perfect Black feature is a key component to ensuring that your viewing is quite haunting (and we mean that in the most sincere way).

Jon M. Chu's adaptation of Lin Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning musical is a joyful explosion of color and sound. It's exactly what a musical adaptation should be: full of life, kineticism, and heart. The imaginative musical numbers look especially fantastic thanks to LG OLED's Filmmaker Mode, showing off the way that Chu's staging highlights the most important aspect of the story: the thriving community en el barrio.

For film lovers, possessing an best TV is the equivalent of having one’s own cinema screen in the comfort of one’s own home. Pushing this a step beyond, the recently launched Dolby Vision and Filmmaker Mode is designed to enable viewers to see movies as directors originally intended – not just capturing the cinema experience in a domestic setting, but amounting to a truly unique, irreplicable viewing event.

In 2019, the mode was created by UHD Alliance, television manufacturers and industry . It was supposedly the collective brainchild of major film figures “Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Patty Jenkins, Martin Scorsese, and Christopher Nolan”. The concept: to remove post-processing settings like motion smoothing, sharpening and image enhancement so that the result would be crisper, more streamlined and truer to the director’s vision. Controlled entirely by a film’s metadata, the frame rate, aspect ratio, color and contrast is tailormade to each movie. This setting has only been made available on LG OLED TVs this year.

1) Lady Macbeth 3n1g5c

With its delicate compositions and high-contrast color palettes leaning into the influence of Dutch paintings, William Oldroyd’s chilling debut feature Lady Macbeth (2016) makes for a perfect movie to watch with Filmmaker Mode. Following a recently married young woman kept indoors by her cruel husband, before her story is propelled towards its gruesome conclusions, its contrasts of light and dark, interiors and exteriors, and warmth and coldness are crucial not only to the visuals of the film but are also key to understanding its meaning.

Opening at night in the constricted, wood-walled interiors of Katherine’s (Florence Pugh) new home, Filmmmaker Mode’s dense, perfect blacks and rich yellows add to the oppressive atmosphere of the alien situation the new bride finds herself in. Seemingly a result of sharpening settings being disabled, the seamless integration of colours and shape really is astounding. As the fire crackles, the transmutations of light flickering across her are so nuanced as to be breathtaking.

Rugged, tousled landscapes and cloud-thick skies are the typical makeup of Lady Macbeth, which are rendered in stunning detail by Filmmaker Mode. On the other hand, the interior scenes, with their sparseness and delicacy, are caught in impressive three-dimensionality. White walls and neutral browns, as well as symmetrical composition, bring the focus back to exquisite colours which can be fully appreciated on LG OLED TV: the teal of Katherine’s dress and the steely blue of her eyes.

Light plays an important role in Oldroyd’s feature – the outside world offering shreds of hope to its trapped female protagonist – and Filmmaker Mode helps to make this meaning clear. As a window is opened, the softness of light pouring into Katherine’s mahogany wood-led room is extraordinarily subtle, the colours within it incrementally shifting as day enters. At other moments, the hallways of the house where Katherine is imprisoned are plunged in a deep, eerie blue.

Filmmaker Mode also enhances the correspondences in colours within frames: the windswept landscapes and the wood of the walls mirror the reds and browns of Katherine’s hair. The starkness of scene changes is intensely felt, one scene to the next seeming like a complete visual transformation. But there are also almost impossibly gentle shifts in light, from the descent of night into the rise of day. The shine of characters’ skin next to a coal-burning fire, the radiance of a starched shirt and clean bedsheets, and the textures of Katherine’s vivid green satin dresses almost leap out of the screen. Within one frame, the contrasts between shades on the warm end of the color spectrum and the cold can also impressively coexist. Even a muddy stable looks as beautiful as a painting.

There is a dynamism which Filmmaker Mode entails, because of its removal of motion smoothing. A character pummels dough and the table shakes as intensely as an earthquake. Even when Katherine walks, the energy of her movement can be felt through the screen. Stillness and the chaos of movement – brought on at key moments of impending disaster – is another contrast in Lady Macbeth which Filmmaker Mode strengthens.

2) Once Upon a Time In... Hollywood 4a441o

Watching Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood (2019), directed by Quentin Tarantino, with Filmmaker Mode could in some ways not be a more different viewing experience. The busyness of color, tone and composition is immediately, almost aggressively evident. As with Lady Macbeth, Filmmaker Mode enhances the colours and textures of costumes, imbuing them with a three-dimensionality. In the clamour of Tarantino’s visual composition, tiny details – the redness of Leonardo DiCaprio’s eyes, the oceanic blue of denim, brown leather – instantly stand out.

With Filmmaker Mode, Tarantino’s film is given a depth of colour which might not even be possible to achieve in a cinema setting. The perfect blacks and bursts of red and blue add up to rich, decadent visuals. In its opening sequences, DiCaprio’s character Rick Dalton, an actor based in Los Angeles, appears in a showreel-like sequence of clips. First, a classic western – rendered here in crisp, but grainy black-and-white – then a kinescope of a musical number, the glossy whiteness and pristine contrast worlds apart. In one scene, where Rick tests out flamethrowing equipment, one can feel the full force of the theatrical experience.

The colours are highly saturated, especially the candy-like reds and blues of Hollywood. Even a stick of celery which Brad Pitt wafts around a Bloody Mary cocktail is tinged a fluorescent green. Again, there is a unique cohesiveness to the colours in each scene: in stuntman Cliff Booth’s (Pitt) trailer, sickly yellows seem omnipresent in the walls, dogfood, eggs and macaroni that he eats for his dinner. A scene set at the Playboy Mansion with Margot Robbie’s character Sharon Tate is doused in intoxicating reds and blues, the light almost tangibly bouncing off her blonde locks.

The most important colours pop out of the screen with Filmmaker Mode. Later in the film, the mismatched colours orange and purple provide a dazzling backdrop to an idling Margaret Qualley, while the saloon where Rick is filming is cluttered with blues and browns.
Another quality which Filmmaker Mode captures with unique precision is the varying textures of light. The glow of car headlights and the different refractions of light from neon signs, the fine rays of a searchlight, plus the blinding glow of sun bouncing off Rick’s leather jacket, are caught here impressively. This setting also brings out the heaviness of the weather – when it is overcast, the contrast changes entirely, but when it is sunny the screen is tinged with yellow. Without such technology-enhanced visuals, one would not notice the radiant quality to much of Tarantino’s film, which possibly is linked to the gilded nature we expect from life in Hollywood – though this is perhaps not the reality.

The chameleonic range of Tarantino’s movie really showcases what Filmmaker Mode can do. There are snippets of retro-homage to black-and-white westerns, odes to 1950s-style musicals and authentically recreated 1970s-quality television, and each, with their varying resolution, sharpness and tint, appear completely differently on the screen.

The defining feature of Filmmaker Mode may be that it is so distinctive for each film. The two opposing styles of Lady Macbeth and Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood demonstrate the versatility of this viewing technology. Though one film is quiet and aesthetically minimalistic and the other is bustling, both in of movement and composition, both are made equally compelling with Filmmaker Mode – almost so much so that one feels like you are being pulled into the screen.

Back again with LG OLED Score ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Chris Fujiwara, Executive Chairperson of Edinburgh Film Festival shares his Top 5 films of the 1990s with LG OLED Scores. Great Times with Great Movies, even with Great Insight! Have you watched any?

Khrustalyov, My Car! (Aleksei German, 1998)

In the 1990s, some in the West celebrated the collapse of the Soviet Union by proclaiming it the end of history. It makes sense to start our cinematic time-machine trip to that decade with Aleksei German’s vision of a moment in Soviet history when which way things would go was just as unclear. German presents the Moscow of Winter 1953 (the time of Stalin’s death) as a grotesque carnival. Every scene overflows with clutter, as if a thousand cabinets, shut for half a century, were suddenly opened to let their contents spill over the screen. Once thought forbidding, Khrustalyov, My Car! has probably become more accessible today because of its game-like structure: the journey of the hero, a high-ranking brain surgeon who undergoes humiliation and rehabilitation in a single night, involves a series of micro-rituals of age (such as climbing a wall on a ladder, sitting on top, and tipping over backwards). The ebullience of the film, shot in gleaming black-and-white with an improbably energetic camera, never flags.

Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood, 1992)

In making Unforgiven, the most praised of the several good or great films he made in the 1990s, Clint Eastwood is conscious that he is not just making a good classical Western but summarizing and criticizing the American myth of the redemptive power of violence. The pervasive darkness of Unforgiven lingers in the mind—it is one of the most nocturnal of Westerns—but some of the film’s most defining moments are its simplest and brightest: Eastwood (playing a reformed bad man who is lured out of retirement) tenderly explaining to a scarred prostitute why he refused her offer of a “free one”; Gene Hackman looking forward to watching the sun set from the porch he’s adding to his ramshackle house; Morgan Freeman’s discovery that he can no longer kill. Quintessentially American, too, is Eastwood’s quick and elegant construction of images in which one person, one form, is played against another for maximum impact.

Flowers of Shanghai (Hou Hsiao-hsien, 1998)

In this ravishing object of wonder, set in a high-level brothel in late-19th-century Shanghai, Hou Hsiao-hsien presents a world that is closed on itself in time and space. When not further isolating themselves with opium, its inhabitants amuse themselves with drinking games and talk about almost nothing but affections and disaffections; whatever may be happening outside is never mentioned—except in one scene in which noises in the street prompt a few of the characters to go the back of the set to look out a window. Their report when they come back is obscure—some people are investigating something in a back alley—but it satisfies everyone. Sex, if it happens, happens offscreen, and it is clear in any case that sex cannot be not the only reason for the women’s power to monopolize the attention and interest of the men. Everything in the film blends together—costumes, decor, props, the grace and naturalness of the actors—and everything glows with an intensity that might come from the viewer’s own longing to merge with the spectacle.

-Visual Beauty ★★★★★
-Recommended to watch on LG OLED ★★★★★

*Overall ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

A Tale of Autumn (Eric Rohmer, 1998)

Eric Rohmer’s late-period masterpiece resembles Hou’s Flowers of Shanghai in that its characters are concerned mainly with love relationships between men and women. As Marie Rivière (as a bookseller who seeks to play matchmaker for her wine-grower friend) says at one point: “There are a thousand ways to waste time. This way is no more stupid than another.” A Tale of Autumn is grounded in the sunniness of Southern and in everyday places and concerns: we visit Rivière’s bookstore, Béatrice Romand’s vineyard, and the apartment where Romand’s son studies; Alain Libolt (the widower whom Rivière ensnares with a personal ad) talks briefly about his work. This surrounding reality contrasts with the almost exclusive preoccupation of the dialogue with love, desire, or their possible emergence. Rohmer’s style achieves perfection: each shot opens toward something new, continuing a spiraling series of misunderstandings, riddles, and postponements.

A Brighter Summer Day (Edward Yang, 1991)

Edward Yang’s portrait of 1960 Taiwan provides the feeling of a complete view of a world whose essential characteristic is that it is incomplete. The teenage hero’s parents have carried with them to Taiwan their memories of their interrupted lives in China, along with a radio that, after a certain point in the film, ceases to receive signals. The younger generation form gangs and fight one another in pointless turf battles. Their culture is formed out of an American popular culture that they absorb and emulate in their own way (the English title of the film comes from the hero’s sister’s attempt to transcribe the lyrics of “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” from the Elvis record). The characters of the film are no less stuck in a nightmare than those of Khrustalyov, My Car!, though the weather and landscape are subtropical, and the cruel authorities are anti-communist. Doomed never to master their world, the young protagonists possess a vulnerability that is indistinguishable from their ferocity.

Better to Show than Tell kn19 https://letterboxd.zoneani.me/lgoled/story/better-to-show-than-tell/ letterboxd-story-22243 Mon, 29 Apr 2024 04:37:33 +1200

According to the book <101 Things I Learned in Film School>, it's always better to show rather than tell when it comes to the film (Recommend this book for those who interested in flim making).

With the advancement of technology, there has been a transition from silent films to talkies, making the role of dialogue in movies incredibly important. However, sometimes silence in a scene gives the audience a chance to think and feel what they see, allowing us to experience movies more deeply.

For this SHOWDOWN Theme A Quite Place: Best films with limited dialogue, we've prepared 10 movies in two sets.

Better to Show Than Tell (SIDE A) by Editor Zorba - Here
Better to Show Than Tell (SIDE B) by Editor Capo - Here

[Things to NOTE]

(1)Especially the films by director Tsai Ming-Liang are the essence of quietude , so if you haven't seen them yet, be sure to give his movies a try (Please be careful not to fall asleep).

(2)Every single moment in Long Day’s Journey Into Night is a piece of ART. We highly recommend watching these beautiful scenes with LG OLED.

Here, Mark Peranson, the chief programmer at the Berlinale, has meticulously curated a selection of top-tier movies, showcasing the best of the best with his discerning eye. Get ready for an exploration of cinematic excellence and discover with his LG OLED Score.

Twin Peaks: The Return (David Lynch, 2017)

Got a light? A project long anticipated that, at the same time, had no legitimate right to exist, David Lynch’s magnum opus is the landmark work of the decade: a pure gift to cinephiles, it brought us back to the future, ignited the present, and, in an era of “peak TV,” further blurred the boundaries between what is cinema and what isn’t. What to highlight in describing the wonderful world of Lynch? The rebirth of Kyle MacLachlan’s Special Agent Dale Cooper from his Dougie slumber? Laura Dern’s at-long-last appearance as Cooper’s secretary Diane (albeit, as a “tulpa”)? David Bowie reincarnated as a massive teakettle? Or you can just put the explosive Twin Peaks origin story that is the miraculous Part 8 on an infinite loop on your TV, or at least one lasting as long as Oppenheimer. Writing this makes me want to watch it all again, right now.

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2010)

All hail the Apichatpalme, an event that, likewise, was inconceivable then and will probably never be duplicated. To my knowledge Joei has never made television, but does more than dabble in the world of fine art—the early part of this century saw the need for cinema to reach out to the gallery, as for most filmmakers the financial burden of major productions impinges on their impulsion for creative expression. A 16mm-shot experiential journey of reincarnation and transformation that closed Apichaptong’s multi-faceted Primitive project, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Liveslanded like a UFO from outer space at the turn of the decade and led Apichatpong to meme-level cinephilic repute, emblematized by its Lynchian scarlet-eyed “monkey ghost.” I even put it on a T-shirt.

Leviathan (Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel, 2012)

The title is, of course, Biblical, referring to a great fish that eventually came to symbolize evil in the Christian Era. This Leviathan is the locale for slaughter, for blood, for heavy metal mechanical mayhem; via the many GoPros of anthropologists Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel, it’s immersive documentary filmmaking by way of Baroque painting and slasher cinema. The title also brings to mind Hobbes, whose Leviathan was the State; he also philosophized that all ideas are derived from sensory experience. Marking the explosion of Harvard’s Sensory Ethnography Lab into prominence, Leviathan remains a stunning and unparalleled work, one which discovers new forms. Fun fact: Apichatpong Weerasethakul was President of the Locarno jury that completely ignored Leviathan, possibly due to the screening taking place in a cinema that was the auditory equivalent of the hull of a ship, volume cranked by the filmmakers to deafening heights. Or maybe he just thought it was too fishy.

Right Now, Wrong Then (Hong Sangsoo, 2015)

While the Hong Sangsoo slot on this list could be occupied by almost any other film from his 2010s output—from Oki’s Movie, the film that changed it all in of his production process and the centering of the female perspective, The Day He Arrives (also a masterpiece), Hill of Freedom, through to On the Beach at Night Alone (which appeals to me for more than just personal reasons)—Right Now, Wrong Then is the best representation of the repetitive Hongian multiverse, in its literal bifurcated inscription of “infinite worlds possible.” Despite its unique (for Hong) high-concept premise, there is something universal—if not magical—about this philosophical treatise that elevates it to a higher level. It’s also the only film of his to win the top prize at a major festival (again, Locarno). Also, even though he was still employing a cinematographer back then, I must it that most Hong films look better on smaller screens.

Tabu (Miguel Gomes, 2012)

An impressively dense yet fleeting concatenation of doomed love, colonial guilt, a reflection on the changing aesthetics and characteristics of cinema, Tabu is a deeply emotional and heartbreaking experience; like its female protagonist Aurora, it’s bipolar, both depressive and ecstatic. Like all of Miguel Gomes’ films, it is preoccupied with storytelling and the perceptual contrast between “reality” and “fiction,” taking the form of a cinephile’s bastard child fever dream that combines Godard, Out of AfricaLetter from an Unknown WomanMogambo, Errol Flynn, Crocodile Dundee, a whole lot of Portuguese cinema I can’t place, and, of course, F.W. Murnau, stunningly shot on 16mm monochrome by Rui Poças (before Gomes moved on to employing Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, the DP of, you guessed it, Apichatpong). The imaginary is key to Tabu, like it is to most fiction cinema that matters in the tradition of Méliès, and I’m going to stop over-intellectualizing a filmic version of saudade that still strikes me as impossibly moving.

<Maestro 1n2z6 :The Beauty of Black and White https://letterboxd.zoneani.me/lgoled/story/maestro-the-beauty-of-black-and-white/ letterboxd-story-21276 Fri, 22 Mar 2024 04:15:40 +1300

The LG OLED MOVIE CLUB sheds light on <Maestro> in this article. Alongside cinematic criticism of the film, let's focus on the special sensory pleasures that can be experienced through LG OLED.

The Netflix original movie "Maestro," directed, starring, and written by Bradley Cooper, is a biographical film about the life of Leonard Bernstein, an American composer, and conductor. Some may have expected a movie filled with captivating music, like his previous work "A Star is Born," which stimulates our ears. However, despite being a biographical film about a musician, this time, Cooper's work does not show significant interest in Bernstein's musical achievements or accomplishments. Instead, it focuses on portraying Leonard Bernstein's life as if abstracted through the screen.

One notable feature of "Maestro" is that it is composed of two different colors: black and white, and color. The first half of the film, depicting the happy moments of Felicia and Leonard's marriage from their first encounter, is presented in black and white, while the story from the point where conflicts with his wife escalate is portrayed in color, creating a contrast. While using black and white in the 21st century may sometimes feel arbitrary, Bradley Cooper offers a fresh perspective by presenting happy moments in black and white and intensifying conflicts in color, providing viewers with a new freshness.

The early and mid-parts of the black-and-white film evoke many characteristics of classic cinema. The detailed performances of the actors expressed through the short distance between the camera and the characters, reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin, and the lively music and theatrical changes in space also bring to mind musical films. Personally, the moment when viewers realize that the early part of "Maestro" is in black and white, starting from the scene of opening the curtains of Leonard’s apartment, and seamlessly transitioning to Carnegie Hall, is one of the scenes where visual enjoyment explodes. For home theaters and services ing Dolby Vision, experiencing these charms more vividly through "Maestro" is undoubtedly welcome news. If you want to feel these charms even more, LG OLED is undoubtedly the best choice. Especially, in Filmmaker Mode, which allows you to better directly experience the director's intentions, making the aforementioned cinematic features appear more like a film shown on a black-and-white screen and less like a video.

In addition, as mentioned earlier, although "Maestro" may not emphasize musical charm like "A Star is Born," it utilizes the music of the great musician Leonard Bernstein as the film's score. Therefore, through Dolby Atmos and LG OLED TV, viewers can experience even more immersive and dynamic sound. From the 1940s to the 1980s, "Maestro" captures the 40-year life of Leonard Bernstein on film by setting different aspect ratios for each era, utilizing black-and-white direction, and employing movie color palettes to evoke the feel of the times. It's a movie with a compelling story and full of visual charm.

If you're wondering what movie to watch at home, how about watching "Maestro" on an LG OLED TV that s Dolby?

Greetings! Back again with LG OLED Score ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Today, We are with Carolyn Hinds, a freelance Film Culture Critic and Journalist, and host of the [Carolyn Talks] - Interesting Filmmaker Interview Podcast & Youtube. Here, she shares some of her top films of the 2000s and LG OLED Scores with sharp insights

CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON (2000)

Directed by Ang Lee and adapted for the screen by Wang Hui-ling, Tsai Kuo-jung, and James Schamus, this martial arts epic based on the novel by Wang Dulu, is a standout homage to the Wuxia genre of Chinese folklore and martial arts films. It introduced international audiences not familiar with them to the particular style of fight choreography incorporating the use of aerial acrobatics known as ‘wire fu’, and the stellar cast of Asian screen legends Chow Yun Fat, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi and Chang Chen.

Lee’s cinematic scope of filming was befitting this heartbreaking yet inspiring tale of love, loss, devotion, and obsession as it followed the impetuous Jen (Zhang) and her obsession with the “Green Destiny”, a 400-year-old sword owned by martial arts legend Lu Mi Bai (Chow). Not understanding that it’s the person wielding the sword, and not the sword itself that garners respect, Jen believes she has a right to the sword after stealing it. Though possessing impressive fight skills, her lack of understanding and appreciation for what Lu Mi Bai, and Yu Shu Lien (Yeoh) for whom his love has been steadfast though unfulfilled, stands for as martial artists, comes with a high cost to everyone she encounters including her lover Dark Cloud (Chang).

With gorgeous cinematography, a sweeping score, and some of the best fight sequences in film history, Crouch Tiger, Hidden Dragon, is as exhilarating to watch now as when it was first released.

HERO (2002)

Filmmaker Zhang Yimou is known for making films with intricate plots and characters that keep their true intentions and motivations hidden right until the last minute, which makes watching his films like Hero fun to watch.

Set during the tumultuous years of the Qin Dynasty, the plot of Hero seamlessly between the past and present as the King of Qin sitting on his throne separated by one hundred
yards from everyone around him, tries to figure out the intricate plot of his attempted assassination at the hands of Nameless (Jet Li). With each new clue the King unravels, another one is revealed for him to solves showing the plot to be as intricate as the martial arts skills of Nameless and his three co-conspirators: Broken Sword (Tony Leung), Flying Snow (Maggie Cheung), and Long Sky (Donnie Yen).

Reminiscent of the famous Shaw Brothers who pioneered the Chinese martial arts film industry, and Zhang’s other Wuxia films House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower, and Shadow, Hero is a fantastic addition to the genre as a film that perfectly combines the complexity of various fight styles demonstrated with dramatic flair, visually arresting set pieces, the beauty of the China’s vast untamed landscapes, and of course an engaging storyline where palace intrigue, devotion, love and sacrifice sit at the centre.

THE INCREDIBLES (2004)

There are people who see animated films, cartoons as being a lower form of filmmaking because they think that films and shows made with children in mind don’t require complex storytelling and filmmaking, but it’s the opposite. Making films that appeal to children on a visual and thematic scale and can grow with them through adolescence into adulthood is a fine balancing act, and the creative teams at Pixar Animation Studios are masters at this fine wire act. No film in their repertoire exemplifies that more than their multi-genre family adventure The Incredibles.

Written and directed by Brad Bird, The Incredibles, his second feature after The Iron Giant, is a fantastic blend of Sci-Fi, James Bond inspired action and music, and heroic escapades tied with a neat bow of soap opera worthy family drama. The film gives an ingenious look at the everyday lives of superheroes. Who they are when they aren’t saving lives and defying the laws of physics, following the main protagonists, a family of five who each have their own struggles conforming to society's constraining rules of being “normal”.

Bird’s writing brilliantly asks why anyone should have to hide what makes them unique especially when that uniqueness is no longer wanted or deemed useful to society. The film not so subtly delves into the destructive nature of celebrity worship, gender dynamics in and outside of the home, capitalism, and the usefulness of capes. All of this and so much more is presented in stunning innovative technicolour animation and characters that have left deep impressions with audiences fourteen years and counting. My person favourite is Edna Mode, the tiny comically no-nonsense costume designer with a heart of gold and fire.

LADY VENGEANCE (2005)

The best laid plans are those where only the planner is aware of every detail, and in Park Chan-wook’s final entry to his famed Vengeance Trilogy, Lee Yong-ae’s career defining performance as Lee Geum-ja is the definition of methodical. After being wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of a child, Lee Geum-ja emerges from her 13-year prison sentence filled with a burning desire for vengeance she keeps hidden behind a facade of coolness, belied only by striking red eye shadow.

While 2003’s Oldboy is perhaps the most well known of the trilogy, Lady Vengeance is Park’s best executed of the films. Lee Geum-ja’s plan for revenge wouldn’t work if Park wasn’t as methodical in his construction of the narrative, direction of the actors, and detailed visuals realised by cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon. Perhaps the best scene that encapsulates this is the reveal of a gun Lee Geum-ja commissioned to be made by the husband of one of her former cellmates. The steps taken to this achievement are precise and purposeful. Though the film’s main plot focuses on revenge, it also gives space to the female characters, the women whom Lee Geum-ja carefully befriended, to discuss the ways in which women are used, abused, and discarded by society, and how these realities influence their interactions with it. All these elements combined makes it one of the best revenge physiological thrillers of the 2000s.

CHILDREN OF MEN (2006)

As a filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón is never predictable in what his next project could be, but he can always be depended on to create a story that stays with the audiences long after the credits roll as his dystopian drama Children of Men does.

Based on P.D. James’s 1992 novel of the same name, the story takes place in London 2027, and stars Clive Owen as Theo Faron, a beleaguered civil servant who sees no need to invest his time and energy into nothing beyond what his job requires of him, and gambling at the racetrack. This all changes when his ex-wife s him to request his help in getting a young woman, Kee (Clare Hope-Ashitey) out of the city. When it’s revealed Kee is pregnant, the first pregnancy in almost 20 years.

Once upon a time, a film like this would be called dystopian as it presents a future world completely crumbling and laid to waste from years of war, sickness, infertility, and the hopelessness of humanity. But I’ve always considered it to be scarily prescient in its depiction of the impacts of war and racial and ethnic prejudices on society from a local to a global scale, both past and present. Cuarón doesn’t shy away from the violence of men in the scenes of intense violence where blood spatters land on the camera lens, a unique film choice that places the audience into this brutal environment with Theo and Kee. But to balance the darkness he also gives them, us, moments of reprieve where the characters experience joy, kindness, and hope, which makes Children of Men a film that captivates and provokes thoughts about what we want our world to become.

SUNSHINE (2007)

The sun is dying, and with it the hope for humanity's continued existence. With the weight of the world relying on the ability of eight astronauts to complete the insurmountable task of reigniting the brightest star in our solar system. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, Sunshine is without a doubt one of the most emotionally intense films in the science fiction genre made in the 2000s.

As the Icarus II the ship so aptly named draws closer to the sun, the tensions amongst the crew increases. Boyle’s attention to the details of characters' emotions in centering the actors on screen, focusing on every small gesture and expression they make brings home the emotional toll the journey, destination, and purpose takes on them.

The production design and cinematography of Sunshine are impressive, with a particular set piece, a large viewing window that allows the crew to observe the sun in all its glory that becomes a centrepiece of the film. ing all of this is the beautiful score that incorporates multiple music styles and genres, namely the main theme ‘Adagio in D Minor’, an orchestral piece composed by John Murphy that is perhaps as hauntingly beautiful as the feeling of sunshine on the skin.

THE MAN FROM NOWHERE (2010)

Sometimes you just want to watch a film with a straightforward plot and execution that leads to a satisfying ending, and writer and director Lee Jeong-beom’s noir action thriller succeeds at both.

Starring Won Bin as Kim Tae-sik, a pawnshop owner referred to as “Ahjusshi” by So-mi (Kim Sae-ron) a little girl whose curiosity and loneliness causes her to gravitate to this man of few words and stern nature. Though he begrudgingly accepts her company when she seeks him, Tae-sik’s small gestures of consideration reveal a kind nature. But that gets shoved to the side when So-mi and her mother are kidnapped in retaliation for So-mi's mother stealing from the local drug lord, at the prompting of her boyfriend.

All hell quickly breaks loose, and Tae-sik goes on a bloody and violent rampage to find So-mi at all costs. Yes, the plot can be simply described as “Find the girl. Save the girl”, but that would do a disservice to the underlying depths to So-mi and her Ahjusshi because as much as the film is about the amazingly choreographed fight sequences, it’s a story about two people who see and appreciate each other in ways the people around them don’t.

Interview with Alex Bickel 1f4i3y the colorist for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Lady Bird, Moonlight https://letterboxd.zoneani.me/lgoled/story/interview-with-alex-bickel-the-colorist-for/ letterboxd-story-20069 Sun, 4 Feb 2024 08:05:47 +1300

*Written by BAE Dong-mi

The movie that showed you the most colors recently was probably Everything Everywhere All at Once. Set in Evelyn's dingy laundromat, where all the colors have faded, the film opens up the multiverse of colors, introducing us to the world of Evelyn the Actress, Evelyn the Chef, and Evelyn the Rubber Hand. Alex Bickel, a colorist with more than 20 years of experience, is responsible for all the colors in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Using the LG Ultrafine OLED Pro 4K EP950 and LG OLED evo G3 for his DI work, I asked him about the secrets of colors in Everything Everywhere All at Once, how color affects our emotions in films, and what makes a good display.

What are you working on these days?

Color Collective llc always keeps busy on a nice mix of projects. We’ve got a few films premiering at Sundance film festival this month, including Exhibiting ForgivenessSuncoast and Out Of My Mind.

As a colorist you are working on multiple projects at once. How many displays do you usually use in your work? Are you also using LG Display?

We are always moving between multiple jobs. I often find it useful to step away from a project for a little while, to get perspective and see things with fresh eyes. It’s a useful part of our process. We evaluate our work on many displays, including LG Ultrafine OLED Pro 4K EP950, LG OLED evo G3, and so on. Typically our films are delivered for theatrical, EDR, HDR and SDR distribution.

If you've used LG OLED, what do you think of the display?

It has a nice wide viewing angle and the ability to calibrate by loading a LUT into the display. It provides excellent results. I have found that the LG EP 950 is a great display to grade on.

You probably have your favorite display settings for your workplace and home. Which settings do you prefer?

We fully calibrate all our displays by profiling and loading calibration LUTs into the displays.

LG OLED offers a filmmaker mode that best realizes the creator's intent. How do you think cinematic mode helps the audience?

I do think it is important to turn off all the motion smoothing, noise reduction and other image processing. It’s always important to minimize any interference with the film maker’s original intent.

I'd like to focus on Everything Everywhere All at Once. When the movie starts, Evelyn's house and laundry are the first things we see, and she's wearing a purple floral shirt as she moves around the house and laundry. It's desaturated and has an overall worn look. Please explain how you wanted to color the frames before Evelyn knewed about the multiverse.

EEAO was a unique challenge for us from a color perspective. It was important for Evelyn’s real world to be as authentic, ordinary, and grounded in reality as possible. Her real life is where all the heart in the film originates. If her family life wasn’t believable, the rest of the journey wouldn’t work. it would have no stakes.

Since you're dealing with a multiverse, you were having a different DI strategy for each universe. What DI strategies did you use to create Evelyn the famous actress, Evelyn the chef, Evelyn the hot dog sausage finger, and Evelyn the Kung-fu master?

Each universe relied on a different bag of tricks. We changed up LUTs for many universes, to create more diverse color palettes.(*Lookup tables(LUTs) are used for color grading and for mapping one color space to another. LUTs are commonly used to calculate preview colors for a monitor or digital projector of how an image will be reproduced on another display device, typically the final digitally projected image or release print of a movie.) We also used different grain and halation for different universes to help create more unique visual cues. Her actress universe was full of rich golden hues, just trying to be as glamorous as possible… her chef universe was a bit of a nod to early Paul Thomas Anderson vibes, hot dog universe was a nod to how a hallmark film might feel etc. We pulled inspiration from all over.

While Evelyn’s daughter, Jobu Tubaki, is usually represented in black, although her costume is colorful. What kind of mood and feel were you going for with the black for Jobu Tubaki?

The everything bagel was sort of a black hole, a nihilist abyss, so Zobu was an extension of that. We really didn’t do much in the DI to enhance that. It was all costume, makeup, and art dept.

Approximately how many colors were used in Everything Everywhere All at Once?

EEAO definitely stretched our imagination, in of the number of unique color treatments, and just the total volume of shots. There was one sequence where every frame was a unique shot. It’s hard to quantify… we could diffuse more time, but I’m happy with the work that we did and I’m so pleased that many audiences around the world connected with the film.I really just want to help to tell stories that make people feel seen, or feel connected to each other. This was certainly a highlight for me.

As a final question about the movie, from a colorist's perspective, which sequence from Everything Everywhere All at Once would you recommend to watch on LG OLED and why?

I think OLED are a very cinematic viewing environment, they hold deeply saturated colors well, and the contrast and deep blacks allow a filmmaker complete control over the image. one can get lost in the images. In the HDR version, when Evelyn touches Waymond and all the flashing lair around them, this is the sequence that uses the highest luminance in the HDR transfer, it’s probably the highest contrast image.

You have worked on DI for about 20 years. How has display technology transformed over the years? Please explain how much more important displays have become with the rise of streaming services these days.

Displays have changed a lot throughout my career. What we really want more than anything is to ensure the audiences at home are experiencing the films accurately, and seeing the same image the filmmakers are. Modern OLED TVs are much better at holding onto our vision than older technologies.

Does the audience's eye for color change from the past. Or, conversely, have people's ideas about color not changed much?

I think HDR has allowed for better accuracy. When we utilize DolbyVision, the TV ends up more faithfully representing the final grade. We don’t often use the full 1000 nits, unless it’s something like an explosion or flashing light. We mostly keep things under 300 nits, but even that little extra bit of headroom opens up a more visceral image.

You've been a colorist for a long time, so what are some of the principles you follow dealing with DI?

For me, there is only one guiding principle: Story. Everything we do in the DI is all in service to the story the film is telling. All the tech tools and tricks are only good if they make the audience feel more and identify with the character more. Movies transport you, and allow you to be lost in a story. The grade is just one part of that. Honestly, if you’re thinking about the grade while you’re watching the film, then we’ve failed. The best color is powerful, but so integral to the story you don’t notice it.

Lastly, what are the important virtues of a good display?

For me, it’s important that the color gamuts are accurately rendered, that the black levels fall of smoothly without clipping, that the viewing angle is wide to allow everyone in the same room to experience the same input, that the display in uniform across the entire , and ideally that the backlight be broad enough to stay near if memetic failure(meaning everyone sees the same image).
