The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

2024

I wish I'd seen it with a crowd. I'm still not convinced these characters alone are built for sustaining a feature film. At least not without more inspired writing.

I needed more "do you know how hard it is for a male duck to lay eggs?" moments, or choices like static Katamari Damacy-style Farmer Jim. We live in a post-Animaniacs, post-Gremlins 2 world. It doesn't betray the Looney Tunes to get weird with it.

That said, lovely cel animation. I want more of these made for theaters. Just...better.

Does Wes Anderson experience modern day newspaper stories through this whimsical a lens? Or perhaps that's why these last few films of his caricature the Cold War era: much easier to make a tidy cartoon of past farces than our unfolding present.

Anyway, there's an actually compelling relationship at the core, in addition to it being delightful in its zaniness. Myself, I feel perfectly safe saying this is among my favorite Anderson films.

The General

Irrelevant to the film (which is fine, had trouble not rooting for the union saboteurs), but there's a member of the cast named Frederick Vroom. Is this an onomatopoeia with origins as a surname?!

Avengers: Endgame

Time heist good, Everybody-Fight...fine? I'm afraid any future "MCU crossover event" will only look like the latter, because they haven't exactly been building the goodwill needed to pull off anything like the good parts of this film.

I ed Yvette Nicole Brown, but not that Ken Jeong is a security guard in one scene. They should've sprinkled the rest of the Community cast in there.

Howard Stark is out here calling people beatniks in the 70s, I like the idea that he is decades behind on culture.

Avengers: Infinity War

★★★ Rewatched

When it's no longer a Theatrical Event being seen for the first time, it loses a lot of its luster. But then again, it's weird that this works at all.

There's a ing resemblance to Lewis Pullman so I couldn't stop imagining Chris Fleming crushing in the Bob role. No offense to Pullman, he was great.

"Sick piñata! Is that beer smoking weed?"

"That's one of the coolest ways I've ever busted!"

Lovably dumb. I went to high school with that guy. Literally.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning

It's getting so weird that they focus so much on the character of Ethan Hunt (not actually interesting), without ever really acknowledging how old Tom Cruise is (impossible to ignore at this point, more compelling than the stunt show itself). Will this 60-something cult leader man-child ever acknowledge his mortality? His face is 10 years younger on the poster than in the film.

But this one really works for me. As silly as The Entity is, it's at least borrowing…

Still perfect, still brimming with the best vibes. Still the best film of 2025.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout

There are impressive stunts and entertaining sequences, but the movie is pretty explicitly about never having to make hard choices because you know you're the hero and you're going to win in the end and You Can Have It All If You Believe In Yourself. Ugh.

I don't totally know why all that plot armor rubbed me wrong in this installment compared to the others, but it really did. It's been true of most of the Missions: Impossible, but this…

I tried playing the first game, but couldn't get into it. "Adolescent love triangle" in principle is more compelling than the "child trying to save dead mom" plot from the game, but this knock-off Ghibli doesn't work.
