Someone at DC saw Batman Begins and decided the world needed a serious Superman.
The problem is that Superman is a mind-numbingly boring character even in the 70s/80s family comedy version. If you take away the fun, you are left with a perfect guy solving everything without breaking a sweat and the obligatory Lois Lane romantic drama. The only thing giving this blandness any sort of seasoning is Kevin Spacey's Luthor, and it is not like he has a ton of screen time.
