A fascinating French Resistance film by Costa-Gavras. The French title 'Un homme de trop' captures it better as a big part of the film revolves around the moral dilemma involving a 13th freed prisoner where the plan was 12. Who is he? Friend, foe or innocent bystander, and more importantly what should they do with him now that he knows too much to safely let go.
The film packs a lot in its 110 minute runtime. There are two 'heist' scenes, the resistance group constantly on edge because the Germans could come at any time, the struggle to keep ones humanity in inhuman circumstances and some great action scenes, especially its thrilling finale. Unlike other war films of the period this doesn't feel dated as the adventure of it all is toned down in favour of portraying the more grim reality. It also features a great cast with Michel Piccoli as an obvious standout.
Great film and, judging by Letterboxd stats, way underseen.
