Shiva Baby

2020

★★★★

The general discomfort of attending a family function filled with mostly unfamiliar people, turned up to eleven. The discomfort, the prying questions masked as social talk, trying to navigate an escape route fruitlessly, it all felt familiar. Emma Seligman needs just a few pieces of bad luck to make a comedy out of it that feels like a thriller.

The sense of escalating discomfort is build almost perfectly, with the constant soundtrack of half heard conversation and a crying baby, and people shoving and pulling Danielle around the room. No time to think in this circle of hell.
