The Orlando Bloom comedy renaissance is upon us

Watched on Friday June 13, 2025.

Very possible the best thing this movie gave us was the Friday the 13th game back in 2017. 

Which, hot take, that game was the only asymmetrical survival game that truly understood what made that genre enjoyable and I blame Dead by Daylight’s obsession with making the genre a competitive sweat fest as a major reason for the genre’s downfall.

Good movie, would be a shame if they tried to make a live action version.

All things considered, it’s not entirely shocking the script is a mess. Takes some big emotional swings that don’t feel particularly earned and even I can it the presence of Wick himself is a bit shoehorned (despite giving us that great line from the random henchman).

Fortunately, Ana De Armas is so intensely committed to Eve Macarro that the savagery of her action is enough to keep even the messiest of scripts afloat. It also helps that the action still has that tried and proven Stahelski zip and humor— taking turns breaking plates over one another’s head is so silly, but it’s not a John Wick movie without some Looney Tunes gag.

I wonder what this movie would have been like if Stahelski directed it. Or maybe he did? Guess we’ll never know.

This movie would be crazy good if it was animated.

There continues to be a complete undervaluing (arguably an active devaluing) of animation, but Trachtenberg & Company seems to understand its immense potential. Sequences and kills that simply could not exist in live-action exist within Killer of Killers. The gadgets are more twisted, the deaths more ferocious, and none of it coming at the expense of the storytelling.

Add it to the long list of live-action franchises that are better animated, because for some reason, Hollywood thinks it’s the reverse.

One day the game will end. The sun will set. The park will close. Sometimes you don’t even want to play. Other times it’s all you can think about. You used to pitch a 90 mph fastball, now you can only pitch the eephus. But just because it’s slowed down doesn’t mean it’s not worthy to throw. Every pitch matters.

The beautiful thing about movies is that there are so many and it’s impossible to watch them all and sometimes you’ll watch one so good it alters your dna.

Anyways, I just watched Johnny Guitar for the first time.

Oozes with so much personality, largely thanks to the genre defining Englund performance, but Craven directs the hell out of the movie, pun intended. Really interesting to rewatch through a lens of religious guilt, I still don’t love the ending, but it’s always exciting to find new layers to unpack even after 40 odd some years since it’s release.

There is one scene that was very inspired by classic Chan choreography, Ben Wang stumbling all over the place while beating people up, and I thought maybe there’s hope for this movie after all. 

It never happened again. 

Suffers from a major identity crisis. Also, an awful soundtrack.

Enough time has ed. I like MODOK and I’m angry they wasted him in this movie.

For those we’ll never meet.

Even if the series has earned the right to relish in the past a bit, the long-winded exposition drops and outright weird character decisions (mainly Grace + Gabriel) make the first hour undoubtedly frustrating. 

Yet, I’ve happily watched this movie 3 times now, twice within 12 hours, and I’m finding different ways to appreciate the first hour (and new ways to find it frustrating). Fortunately once we get to the sub, the movie operates at absurd levels of “fuck yeah”, the submarine sequence is an all-timer set piece, but most importantly, the prevailing themes of these films culminate in a very beautiful way. 

It’s kind of like what Donloe says on the plane, “it’s all a matter of perspective, friend.” (Or something like that)

The movie from Cannes I’ve been thinking about the most. Mostly because of how radically I went from, this is not very good to this might best movie I’ve seen this year?

It’s kind of like watching the 2014-2015 Knicks play and then at halftime prime Ewing and Starks come off the bench to play. Spike is constructing scenes and images that are so powerful, so exciting, it felt like I had seen Starks dunk on the Bulls for the first time.

Anyways, shitty sports metaphor aside, the movie rocks. Denzel is the best to ever do it. A$AP Rocky is who The Weeknd wishes he could be. I hope Spike Lee makes movies forever.

The Venice chase scene and subsequent alley fight scene is hall of fame worthy— the walls closing in on Ethan literally and symbolically. Dead Reckoning might be a little clunky at times but it’s also the most ambitious of the 8 and I adore it for that reason.

First video game adaptation to premiere at Cannes? Pour one out for Uwe Boll. 

The brilliance of the indie game that went viral in early-2024 was its simplicity— identify the anomaly and then walk in the other direction. Innately tense, horror existing in the banality of our routine commute. As you can guess, it’s why the game is also enjoyable. Rounding the corner, holding your breath, did I find the anomaly?

Yet the game’s primary appeal is mostly an afterthought in its film adaptation. That isn’t to say being more character driven is a bad thing, but there’s almost too much story. Some of it compelling, some of it drab, it’s just a shame there’s little interest in what made the game special. 

It was also midnight screening so maybe I’m delirious.

The evolution of Wes is fascinating to chart and like most of his films, The Phoenician Scheme will grow on me with time, but it lacks so much of the emotional fervor that buzzed through Asteroid City or even The French Dispatch. Fully embrace the Mia Threapleton takeover though!

Tremendous. The Ramsay, Lawrence, McGarvey combo is incendiary.

A lot of thoughts, but so far it’s my fave of the fest.
