A tender and gently probing Norwegian drama about a pair of Oslo chimney sweeps whose lives are forever changed when they casually open up to each other in between jobs one morning, Dag Johan Haugerud’s “Sex” — the standalone first installment of the director’s Kieślowski-inspired “Sex, Love, Dreams” trilogy — is a far cry from the prurient spectacle promised by its title. Indeed, this sweet and chatty film, in which sex is often discussed but never depicted, could just as easily have been called “Love” or “Dreams” (that it wasn’t seems like a joke typical of Haugerud’s dry sense of humor).
But that isn’t to accuse the director of a bait-and-switch. As Oscar Wilde is quoted to have said: “Everything…
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
there's a scene halfway through in a doctors office that is pure comedy gold, with Anne Marie Ottersen basically hijacking the whole shebang in that very moment. it shows how overexerted, zealous and laboured the rest of the film is.
it's an overconscientious effort to combine scandinavian cringe with serious social conversation, in a way that can only come from the most 'progressive' of all western societies right now. in more bold hands this could have been something that's going deeper than this discursive puddle, taking in actual psychosexual insights. but Sex comes rather across as a half-baked first draft of an intriguing idea, as safe path of an allegedly sophisticated collective conversation.
Det jeg prøver å si da, Dag Johan, er bare at jeg lurer litt på hvordan du hadde følt deg hvis jeg liksom lagde en film som het «samtale» og så var det ikke en eneste scene i filmen der noen hadde en samtale…
Sex is about two straight married men having an existential crisis about their manhood in the most Scandinavian way possible. Uneven as it may be, I still applaud it for its slow-burn, often humorous take on an under-the-radar topic.
Homoerotic to its core, Sex comes with a naturalistic, deadpan flavor to chronicle two coworkers' shared problem of being at the receiving end of male gazing, with one result more extreme than the other. For what it's worth, this offers a unique look into the modern-day concept of marriage, sex, and gender identity, which will definitely inspire conversations, and its much-needed dry quirkiness saves this overlong experience from self-collapsing.
cant even fuck dudes anymore without it counting as cheating on your wife, 2024 more like 1984
Gleder meg til Vega publikummet som kommer til billettluka og sier "Ehmmm jeg skal ha en billett til ☝️🤓 SEX 🤣🤣🤣
I'd give the characters the same unprompted advice I give all cishet couples in my life: invest in a strap-on.
unluckily, doctor, i can be that shallow... for why choose a le corbusier typeface when there's papyrus?! weird.
a mellowdrama of a muttercore chronicling two chimney sweeps as they talk abt their identities, side by side, 'cause they're not gay - for sex is not just a matter of doing, it is also a state of being. on random canon events necessitating extensive reactions from intensive reflections as ways of filling in the blanks to create a coherent narrative. since acting upon newfound desires is often always seen as spitting on traditional concepts.
the flick turned me on, i guess, for this series of little talks between people who try to make each other's worlds bigger, not smaller has huge…
Sex is a film about freedom, specifically freeing oneself internally and following desire without pressure. It follows two men, one repressed and uncertain while the other is open-minded without really considering his actions. While one struggles to free himself from his anxieties, the other find his free nature has an effect on his relationship. Sex is basically just a series of dialogue scenes, with characters working through issues relating to their relationships and families. The cinematography is very still, with long takes and the occasional zoom or pan. It reminds me of a Hong Sang-soo film in style, though there are other European arthouse projects with a similar approach. The film is amusing in its character interactions and the Scandinavian humour adds a few laughs. Sex is an entertaining arthouse comedy and a fascinating look at relationships which has plenty to offer.
relatable to me because i also have hour long gender / sexuality crisis talks with the homies and david bowie does come up quite a lot
