Directed by Sam Mendes
Jarhead is a film about a US Marine Anthony Swofford’s experience in the Gulf War. After putting up with an arduous boot camp, Swofford and his unit are sent to the Persian Gulf where they are eager to fight, but are forced to stay back from the action. Swofford struggles with the possibility of his girlfriend cheating on him, and as his mental state deteriorates, his desire to kill increases.

Will you look at that, a war film that actually depicts war. Shocking! Believe me when I tell you Jarhead is one of the best, if not, the most intelligent in its genre, at least in the 21st Century. This amazing film is littered with amazing soundtrack, an amazing cast (Jake Gyllenhaal being the finest), and an amazingly well-written screenplay. Simply amazing. Roger Deakin's cinematography is also a damn fine piece of art. It's only 10 minutes after the film and I already can't wait to watch it again.

Imagine being trained and hyped up to kill, and when you get there, there's nothing.
You miss all the battles, you spend whole days in oil fields and orders to kill get canceled. Imagine the rage of being turned into a killing machine, only to be told there will be no killing, only oil and shit.
That is the wonderful story of Jarhead.
Beautifully shot by Roger Deakins and amazingly acted by Jake Gyllenhaal.
This war drama might bore those expecting something exciting, but this is an exploration of boredom and disappointment, and yet it's still absolutely riveting to watch.

First time watch for me. I actually have seen very few Sam Mendes films. Because both American Beauty and Road to Perdition didn't quite do it for me, I didn't watch another Mendes film until 1917. Yes, I even missed the Bond films. But after seeing 1917, I realized I'm probably missing out. So, rented this on Netflix. Yes, I still rent Blu-rays on Netflix. Looking forward to catching up with Mendes.
Fantastic film. Perhaps a few moments that are too spelled out or less than subtle but overall an amazing accomplishment. You can see the origins of 1917 throughout. Gorgeously shot by Deakins. Excellent performances. And unexpectedly funny. Some LOL lines:
