Aw man, I really thought I’d like this more. Sinners feels like one of those movies that might work better if you go in not expecting much. But with Ryan Coogler & Michael B. Jordan involved, I figured it’d be something great. For me, it just didn’t fully land.
It’s not a bad movie. There’s actually a lot to like. The atmosphere, for one, is really well done. It has this dark, moody, classic & cliché vampire movie aesthetic that I really liked. The euphoric dance scenes & music were really solid and used well to build anticipation. But after a while, it started to feel like a little too much. Like they kept using the same dance elements to build tension or hint that something big was coming, and it just kept going and going… I was sitting there thinking, this is cool and all, but can we please get to the actual story?
That was the biggest issue for me. The pacing just didn’t work. The first half of the movie felt like it was all setup with no real progress. Way too much exposition with a lot of foreshadowing & no payoff until the climax. It was frustrating. Like being at a restaurant and watching everyone else get their food while you keep waiting & waiting… till when it finally does get to you, you’re kinda annoyed about it taking so long.
There are definitely good things here, though. The acting, the style, the overall look of the movie all worked. But it needed to move faster. It had so much potential, it just got stuck in its own buildup. Cool idea, just took too long to get going.
