Materialists is a film that encourages us to broaden our chances at love beyond a strict set of criteria that might make us overlook someone wonderful who will love us for who we are.

Song is two for two. Though I didn’t enjoy this as much as Past Lives, it’s still a grounded, deeply human depiction of the complexities of love and our shallow swipe mentality culture.

Despite loving Korean cinema, I’m ashamed to say I know nothing about K-rock. However, I wanted to watch this because I love music docs about how bands came together… and I loved it! 

You can tell how close the are and how in sync they are musically. This was a delightful watch. I was lost in their story for the whole runtime. I also appreciated that they didn’t compromise on their vision for the band, refusing to fit into a box the industry wanted to mold them into.

I went into my May December viewing experience convinced that the film would be in my top 10 for this year. However, I came out the other side quite disappointed. 

It must be noted that the acting is on point. Melton, Moore, and Portman are all fantastic and portray interesting and vastly different characters. That said, I don’t think the feature utilizes them enough. The characters and the story lacks depth and it left me feeling frustrated. I know that’s…
