Fine with the walking and the central dynamic but every interaction with a stranger was mortifyingly cringeworthy. Do that many people know Simon Armitage well enough to be supposedly recognising him everywhere?

Look, I was lucky to be able to see this in a cinema with an up-for-it crowd not beholden to the mythos of the Fear Street trilogy, and not on Netflix, so I get that my viewing experience had advantages not afforded to others.

But chiefly this isn’t aiming for high art or even being a higher-end, thematically rich horror. It’s aiming to be akin to — not a basic homage of — a distinct type of nasty, disposable 80s slasher. And it absolutely nails the assignment: aesthetically, tonally, how it’s paced, how throwaway it ultimately is.

If you’ve even been to one of the all-night horror events that director Matt Palmer programmes in Edinburgh, you know exactly the type of film he’s aiming for this to be. There’s a sense that compromises had to be made but he’s made something that has fidelity with the types of films he loves, that isn’t bogged down by lore and works entirely on its own merits. A grisly good time with some very fun performances.

Perfect fine film of far-too-many mentors, inexplicable subplots, obvious stunt doubles and fight scenes trimmed down to nothing.

Starting in Lockdown 1 on 02/04/20 in an attempt to replicate our semi-regular, in-person film days we began meeting weekly on Zoom to discuss a film chosen by one of us that was free to stream somewhere and ideally no one had seen before.
