Solid time at the movies! Mike Flanagan delivers something outside of his normal horror bag while still maintaining strong monologue heavy actor first approach to film. This doesn’t always work for me mainly Offerman as narrator. Even with that gripe, I had an emotional response to this. So I’d say this was mission accomplished
The definition of a 2 and a half for me. Some really great performances in this but man there are some terrible choices in this. 50 cent playing himself in high school is silly and kinda fucks with the perception of time. It’s really hard to track where we are in 50s life. But boy let me tell you when when the ambulance ride/birth scene happens that shit is cooking.
This feels like an echo of an echo of Bong Joon Ho’s work. It’s by no means bad but it’s right on the edge of a 2 1/2 and a 3 for me. I found Pattinson to be grating in this very “Billy Madison”. Mark Ruffalo also becomes tired by a point in the movie. Then you have characters that aren’t entirely serviced so it feels as though they probably shouldn’t have been there at all.
