A Fish Called Wanda

1988

Up to its elbows in silly antics and messier and messier events, made all the more delightful by the dramatic irony that keeps us a step ahead of the characters. A Fish Called Wanda is sexy, funny, and cool, which is one of the best combinations you can find in a heist movie. Arguably nothing better than Kevin Kline losing his shit on people.

At its absolute best when we finally get to see the sexual desire that Bella has been suppressing for the entire franchise actualized and explored. Those moments are so fluttery and nervous and laced with a very specific sort of giddy joy that comes with trusting your partner in totality. Too bad that moment has 5 minutes to breathe before we’re bombarded with jokes about that desire, EXTREMELY messy conversations about body autonomy, and the dreaded imprinting scene.

Bella birthing…

David Lynch: The Art Life

Needed to just sit and soak in Lynch’s history, his art, his perspective, him. Lynch believes in the continuation of the soul beyond physical death. He’s still here, just in a new form. The art lives on forever.

And I knew my stuff sucked. I needed to burn through- I needed to find what was my mine. And the only way to find it is to just keep painting and keep painting and keep painting and see if you catch something.

Look at you go!”

I always say that this was my favorite movie in middle and high school, but it is also absolutely still one of my favorite movies of all time.

Watch out for Keith!

Long overdue rewatch inspired by a dire need for a reliable pick-me-up. Was obsessed as a kid and as an adult I’m left really impressed by how well the jokes here still land and how nicely the story operates. Such a fun little crime mystery with an abundance of personality. Had no memory of how stacked the voice cast was so realizing that as each character was introduced really blew me away.

Dee-nah-meat-ay might be a Finding Nemo emulation but it’s still so goddamn funny.

Kaiju so cute I’d let them squish me for fun. Anything to bring a smile to their faces :)

The moments where this centers itself more around Pentecost and Mako are the moments where Pacific Rim really shines for me. The drift connections and the longterm effect of using the Jaegers are really interesting concepts that speak to these larger ideas about the complexities of consciousness and how far we’re willing to sacrifice our individual bodies for the good of…

Anastasia

Anastasia stole my heart as a child, but it seems in adulthood it’s returned it, at least in part. Gorgeous background paintings and some absolutely enchanting songs keep the experience fun enough, but the flimsiness of the story shone through a bit more upon my first rewatch in years. Meg Ryan’s voice acting for Anastasia is still so yummy though and I love Pooka the dog and Bartok the magnificent albino bat very very much.

Listen, I’m not just an arts guy. I love science. I love space. I contain multitudes! And while I adore the attention to detail and focus on scientific accuracy that defines The Martian, I do think its fixation on that element is its greatest downfall. It’s our relationship to the laws of science that makes for such an invigorating experience and I feel like this film has sucked out most of the emotions that are influenced by the science and…

I have also been nervous lots of times!

What a absurd movie. Love the puns more than anything else going on here. The most exciting thing about finally watching this is I can mark it off on my Fill-In Filmography poster.

Superman II

Stark shift in emotional effectiveness compared to the first film. Must be why Superman was a staple in my home growing up and yet my dad never showed me any of the sequels. Still a fun enough watch though, mostly because Christopher Reeves and Margot Kidder are just phenomenal together. Really interesting to see another take on the “woman of your dreams falls in love with your superhero persona before she falls for your human self”, which I’m more familiar with via MJ and Peter Parker in the Raimi trilogy.

Transportive. Feel like I’m a little kid watching this for the first time all over again: transfixed, staring open-mouthed at the TV.

Overwhelmingly human. So many moments highlighting the thrill of being a man nestled amongst the glory of being a god. Clark Kent/Superman walks the line between two worlds with ease and an unwavering kindness that so much of day-to-day life is devoid of.

Lois Lane… the woman that you are. Her independence noteworthy enough to comment on, but…
