Times have changed.”

Monsieur Gustave physically fights fascists without a moment’s hesitation in order to protect his beloved lobby boy. We should all be more like Monsieur Gustave.

Had seen this in over a decade and I’d begun to suspect my affection for it was purely nostalgic in nature. Nope. This is just wonderful. Anderson’s love of writers, and service people, shines and astounds and captures the heart almost instantly. Perfect movie to begin my 29th year with :)

It was inescapable, my father’s depression.

Wrote about why I think this is such an under-appreciated gem of the 2000s last time I watched it. This time around, all I really have to say is I love Off the Map even more and I think it’s time to add it to my list of all time favorites.

If you love Aftersun, you should absolutely be trying to watch this.

A Beautiful Mind

Last time I watched A Beautiful Mind, I was just a wee lad (a high school junior taking IB Psychology) and I vividly feeling really floored by the reveals of the story and how intensely it portrayed certain sequences. Coming back to it now is a bit jarring because what’s here is rather bland and frustratingly narrow in focus. There’s good performances and some impactful scenes here, but the layers of John Nash’s life are flattened by this film,…

SHE IS VERY GORGEOUS TO ME!

A lot going on here is confrontational in a way that either really, really works or really, really doesn’t and I’m one of the lucky ones who it really, really works on. I watch Mission: Impossible III and practically lose my mind over how epic it all is. Ethan and Julia are so important and so in love. Davian is the scariest villain to ever be a part of this franchise. M:I3 team is…

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace

1987

★★ 2

A real bummer Reeve’s Superman run ends with something as silly as Superman IV. It’s not that these can’t have humor, it’s just that the original Superman struck such an intoxicating blend of wit and altruism and wonder that feels extremely in sync with the larger idea of Superman and this feels almost like the exact opposite of that. There’s glimmers of those larger ideas here but they feel inconsequential.

Mission: Impossible II

So many moments that having me going “hell yeah” as they unfold. It’s the stitching together of those ideas that really leaves the film lagging behind a lot of its fellow installments. The edit matters and it’s a shame so much of this was cast to the floor because it means a lot here feels empty or disted. Nyah is awesome despite how desperately the film leans into misogynistic language and actions to discredit her. Final Stamp scene rules SO…

Mission: Impossible

1996

★★★ 1

My least favorite M:I movie but that’s only because they’re all so good. Works best as an introduction to Ethan Hunt and a love letter to split diopter shots. It’s riveting to take in where things began compared to where they are now, but really that just means I spend a lot of this film wishing I was watching the ones I favor more.

Commentary track is Tom Cruise and JJ Abrams pulling a His Girl Friday and talking very fast, very animatedly over one another virtually nonstop. Every stunt has Abrams exclaiming, “And this is real! Tom is doing this” and Cruise chimes in every time with, “Yes, I did do this. It hurt quite a bit”. Two hours of guys being dudes, loving the art of making movies. What’s better than this?

Superman III

Similar to Superman 2 in that it is no where near as great as Superman. Leans into its moments of humor too often for my personal preferences. Those moments between Clark and Lana are a real treat though. I love his relationship with Lois, but I’m such a sucker for the heros’ love interests that love them as their regular self before their superhero self. It’s nice to see Clark chosen and met with so much genuine enthusiasm when so…

Threw this on thinking I had never seen it. My DVD copy is a Side A/Side B DVD and I accidentally popped it in on the B side, so I wound up watching 30 minutes of the back half of the film thinking it was the beginning. Plagued by a whisper of deja vu, I realized my error and flipped the disc so I could watch from the correct starting point. 10 minutes into the actual start of the film…

Andy Dufresne headed for the Pacific.”

Perfect movie. An essential piece of the American cinema landscape. Not many movies made these days are able to encapsulate the sweeping, awe-inspiring scope that The Shawshank Redemption does.
