Star Wars: Visions – Screecher's Reach

2023

Retools one of my favorite lines of dialogue from Phantom Menace, “Now be brave and don’t look back”, into something so spine-chilling. Cartoon Saloons’ combining of Star Wars lore and Irish Folklore looks utterly stunning and works so magnificently well. I cannot describe the devastated “oh” that escaped me over that final shot.

Palm Sunday

2023

★★★★½ Liked Watched

Uses its runtime wisely, unfurling its intent gradually so that when the whole thing is said and done, it lands with maximum impact. Downright gorgeous visuals paired with fantastic sound mixing. Palm Sunday drips with aesthetic, the blood of Christ blessing it with assuredness and power.

Right up my alley. I could have sat through at least double the runtime because of how enticingly impactful the whole thing is. Love the themes here, love how those themes are explored even more.

World of Tomorrow

This is me! And mommy! This is me and mommy walking. This is me and mommy walking…”

I’ve seen World of the Tomorrow so many times and the memory extraction makes me sob every time.

A deep and primal sensation, the kind that is a cornerstone of experiencing Don Hertzfeldt’s work. I feel I have known his projects all my life and their presence provides an equal distribution of great-clawing alarm and all-encoming comfort.

What a happy day it iiiiiiisss!” <3

Welcome to the 20th century!”

Cheery and bright. Those backgrounds are absolutely stunning and something I wish I could jump straight into and have as my view of the world every day. Haven’t revisited It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! in years, but I was amazed by how impressively these 25 minutes transport me back to being seven, curled up on the couch in footie pajamas and with my sisters and all our blankets and stuffed animals, giggling over the…

My Year of Dicks

Why doesn’t this feel right?”

Teen girlhood and how desperate it is to make real life feel like the movies. Each chapter’s focus on a different film genre makes the already unique animation style feel especially exciting. Loved, loved, loved the inner thoughts of our protagonist. Honestly, just loved every single thing about this. My heart is soaring.

The Abortion Diaries

2005

Poignant and devastating in its own right, but especially so in the wake of Roe v Wade’s overturning. Equally as comforting to see these women share such an intimate point in their lives with one another. My thoughts were drawn to this year’s Smoke Sauna Sisterhood

The US fails its citizens every day of the week and it is exhausting.

Life is difficult, but you are loved.

30 minutes of earnest kindness. A safe space to cry. Heavily reminiscent of the same feelings I get with The Little Prince. Something I see myself returning to again and again.

One of our greatest freedoms is choosing how we react to things.”

Birders

2019

★★★★★ Liked Watched

I did, in fact, cry over this. I don’t care what anyone else says, birders are the coolest people in the world and their mere existence justifies humanity. I love birders, I love birds, and I love that humanity is in a place where we can dedicate so much scientific study to these creatures.

Birders is short and sweet and so impressively focused on those who care about conservation and birds most. Love the exploration of what role countries’ borders play in the lives of local wildlife and our ability to engage with that wildlife.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar

2023

Wonderful indeed!

Wes Anderson’s nesting doll. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar evokes the thrill and magic of the theatre and brings it right into our homes. Charming, bright-eyed, and so very fun. I find that with age I appreciate Anderson’s specific brand of humor more and more.

Arrived with a joyous greeting, doesn’t over-extend its time with us, and then leaves with a tender farewell.

I KNOW THE SEA TOO
BUT MINE IS A DARK, DARK SEA

Mesmerizing and revelatory experimentation. Wish I could travel back in time and watch this as it was filmed and edited. Oh to be a fly on the wall in Nobuhiko Obayashi’s editing room…

Talkin’ to myself and feelin’ old
Sometimes I’d like to quit,
nothin’ ever seems to fit
Hangin’ around
Nothin’ to do but frown
Rainy days and Mondays

Haunting and so full of ache. An eerie film whose underground distribution adds greater levels of atmosphere to the story it’s portraying. One of the most grounded and real depictions of anorexia that I’ve ever seen put to screen, which means I had the biggest breakfast while watching to reaffirm…

Mariam

Coming-of-age magic. Girlhood agency at its most determined. Mariam wastes no time in revealing its layered, well articulated story and every moment is rich with intention.
