The Haunting

1963

★★★

The Haunting of Hill House (the Netflix limited series) is one of my favorite shows and one of my favorites of the horror genre to date, so going into The Haunting, the original screen adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s book, I was a little wary.

However, I actually had a really great time watching! There were a surprising number of moments that it turns out Mike Flanagan references in the show that are reflected here in The Haunting, which was really fun to catch onto.

Additionally, The Haunting, while arguably a bit weak in other areas, absolutely thrives in its atmosphere building, ensuring you’re at the very least frozen, waiting to see what will happen next.

I would equate the horror present to that of The Blair Witch Project. Are the paranormal happenings depicted actually happening or are they the mental conjurings of our less than stable lead protagonists? It’s a really fun concept to explore and one that I think Wise did a great job leaning into, particularly for the time The Haunting was made!
