Superman Returns

2006

★★★ Liked

Kinda funny Lois’s big story in the movie is called “why the world doesn’t need Superman” because honestly we’re living in a world where we don’t need Superman returns anymore. It was probably a cute return for the character back in 2006 but ultimately twenty years later we’ve moved on. Which I think is a shame because it’s not inherently bad, at worst it’s just kinda weird and way too long. I like a lot of little moments throughout like the bullet scene and that one nurse trying to give Superman a shot and the needle bends. Big picture stuff starts to vary, I like a lot of the performances but central ones like Lois leave much to be desired. And the constant connections to the original run of the Reeve films is what truly holds it back because it’s hard for it to stand out. One of the aspects that does a ton of the heavy lifting is the music, which isn’t something the movie came up with. Is this supposed to be a Reeve continuation or not, I don’t think the movie fully knows, and that certainly hasn’t helped it form much of a legacy.
Destined to be sorta ed, I dont hate any of it and find most of it to be pretty inoffensive. I do feel like it has elements there that remind me of why I love this character, so it gets that right closer than Snyder ever could. It’s cute but I can’t say it’s some secret hidden masterclass of superhero media. Just a fine albeit weird little detour DC took between cancelling that Nicolas Cage movie with the spider and Michael Shannon screaming “I WILL FIND HIM!!!”
