It's a very self-indulgent film, and very flawed, but not without its charms and laughs.
It's ultimately successful for me because Annie is an endearing, well-written character and I loved the romance and its ups and downs. I loved it, even though Woody Allen's character is a terrorist of the highest order, and I don't understand what fictional or real women see in him.
It made me have the terrible, almost nefarious thought of ing a dating app. Allen's monologue at the end hit me at the gut level.
I became aware of this film because it was added to the Criterion collection a few years ago, then in The Bell Jar, Esther alludes to it, and then Bob and Sylvie go to see it in A Complete Unknown, I knew I had to watch it and I'm glad I did.
